Twin Peaks

I have always been a Lynch fan but I had never seen this series because I wanted to watch it start to finish. A friend of mine lent me the entire series and "Fire Walk With Me" on VHS. I finished it in about two and a half weeks. Absolutely stunning.

Welcome Aboard my friend. Paramount says DVDS of season 2 should be out by either end of this year or early next year. TRAVESTY that about 2-3 years ago we got cleaned up masters of the 1st season w/ no follow up... bastards... At one point, legend has it, Lynch was one of Lucas's top picks to direct Return of the Jedi in 1983. Im sure he wouldve had fun with the Skywalker family (lemme guess... incest, severed hands, droids that say gee and golly....) Also Wik. Also Also Wik... _______________________________

Oh, yeah, baby! I watched it all on VHS in college...one of my roomies had the series and we watched the whole thing together over the course of a year. Stunning. Strange. Surreal.

Favorite Charactor: Bobby Briggs with his Dad, Major Briggs, coming in a close second. One of my favorite scenes: When Major Briggs is tryimg to comfort his son before Lauras funeral telling him it is ok to be afraid. Bobby says "Afraid, AFRAID!!!...I AM GONNA TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN!" Fucking hilarious.

I was always a big Albert fan: "What kind of back warter burb is this?" "Welcome to amateur hour"...etc Michaeal Ontkean (H.S. Truman) was in 'slapshot' and went to UNH (how cool is that?) _______________________________

Posted by Rory_Stark on 2005-06-01 19:22:42 +0000
Man, everybody on that show was pretty great. I'm surprised we don't see more of them. What is Micheal Ontkean up to these days? Or Deputy Andy for that matter.

Posted by rladew on 2005-06-01 19:34:34 +0000
a lot of the actors make appearances at the annual twin peaks fest (Star Trek conventionish, anyone???), but other than Kyle Mclachlan, Sherilyn Fenn, Madchen Amick (ER, some other new NBC sitcom), the midget guy (Carnivale), Jack Nance (dead) Im not too sure _______________________________

I wouldn't put it past Lynch to do a "reunion" at the 25 years later mark. If he is still going in 2014.

Posted by Frederick the Younger on 2005-06-01 19:49:05 +0000
I thought Lynch was an absolute charlatan until I witnessed Twin Peaks. It more than makes up for EraserHead. Huzzah and Kudos to You, Rory.

Posted by Rory_Stark on 2005-06-01 19:57:47 +0000
Yeah, Eraserhead is tough but "Wild at Heart" and "The Elephant Man" are genius. The thing about Lynch is he is all about intuition. I think, in a certain way, that is a major theme in Twin Peaks. I heard that the guy who played "BOB" was just a stage hand who accidently showed up in a scene. When Lynch saw it he decided to write him into the script because he was such a spooky looking dude. Ended up working out pretty well.

Posted by rladew on 2005-06-01 20:05:45 +0000
"The thing about Lynch is he is all about intuition" Ive never heard it put that way, but that is an EXCELLENT description. Eraserhead isn't to be "understood" so much as it is to be experienced. Who says film is always supposed to hold your hand through an A-B-C-D-E-F-G story (or even a A D C B F s Q R Story if yr Bryan Singer, Q Tarantino or Christopher Nolan?) Or going a step further, if you think an idea or an image is more important than a subject doing something, why do you have to have a story at all (other than to make $$ for a studio or being wildly popular I mean) _______________________________

Posted by Rory_Stark on 2005-06-01 20:22:09 +0000
Well I think one of the reasons Twin Peaks was so popular was the balance between Lynch's more out there, free association ideas and structured story arcs. I'm not that big of a fan of his more obtuse stuff. It has merit but I get kind of bored. John Lennon was rumored to have made the decision to go into "Rock and Roll" rather than visual art because he believed it was more direct. I think his quote was, "It's all about dick." .

"Eraserhead isn't to be "understood" so much as it is to be experienced." I hate watching artistic masturbation. I don't want a load in the face of someone else's brillance. Dave L and Stanley K are amazing, dare I say genius, but some of their work sucks ass. Like a salad bar, I will pick and choose what I like. "Who says film is always supposed to hold your hand through an A-B-C-D-E-F-G story (or even a A D C B F s Q R Story if yr Bryan Singer, Q Tarantino or Christopher Nolan?)" Good point. The non-linear storyline is really fun. However, your wording ("who says...") implies, to me, you are stating the following: If you don't like the work of David Lynch, you probably do not understand it. To quote the Big Leb: "Am I wrong? Am I wrong"... "No Frederick, you're not wrong; you're an asshole" *bows to rLadew, wide smirk and eyes a-smile* xoxo, FtY

Thanks, FtY, you said it a lot better than I could.

I respectfully meant no condescension, nor to convey a higher understanding of DL. I have no idea what Eraserhead or Lost Highway are trying to do or what their stories ultimately imply. Just as some people have a difficult time explaining what Jazz is, but know it when they hear it, I would say that a DL movie is like no other and even the ones that frustrate me are still a part of DL and bless him for that. _______________________________

You're really lovely, Ladewtang. I mean that. (And for the record, I still don't get jazz - unless swing counts...) xxx

Posted by Frederick the Younger on 2005-06-02 13:24:34 +0000
Which part?

Posted by Frederick the Younger on 2005-06-02 13:26:20 +0000
rladew, I must agree with pamsterdam... you are a classy gent. Perhaps I was too hasty in sending you that Turd-O-Gram. Be well, FtY

Posted by Rory_Stark on 2005-06-02 13:27:48 +0000
Yeah anyway Supposedly, if there had been a third season, the main plot was to have been Major Briggs rescuing Cooper from the Black Lodge. That shit would be sick!!!

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-06-02 13:35:26 +0000
I didn't see it as a Turd-O-Gram, but a cheeky little Sass-O-Gram. FtY, are you Wiccan?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-06-02 13:40:41 +0000
Um... all of it. The salad bar reference, the Big Lebowski reference, the slightly tongue-in-cheek suggestion that people who love inexplicable films enjoy making people who don't enjoy them feel dumb, and most especially the beautifully-put image of The Great Genius splurting his spooge all over my face. I mean, I don't even know SK or DL.

Posted by Miriam on 2005-06-02 14:27:32 +0000
My fave scene is the last one, where Cooper smashes the medicine cabinet mirror with his head and keeps banging it, all bloody, while screaming, "Where's Annie?! Where's Annie?!" in a mock whine. Ultimate creepy.

Posted by Frederick the Younger on 2005-06-02 14:32:07 +0000
Nay, pamster, I was referring to a real live Turd-O-Gram. Someone will show up at his house with Poo-On-A-Stick and read him bad poetry. This was a common practice in Prussia in the 1800s, as public debate was outlawed. And I am not Wiccan; I am down with the O.D. (sadly, not the ODB RIP). Word.

Posted by Miriam on 2005-06-02 14:38:15 +0000
who's the O.D.?

Posted by rladew on 2005-06-02 15:00:17 +0000
Mark Frost was an awesome colloborator w/ DL. The episodic and narrative arc, I would guess, would be more of Mr. Frost's strong suit. _______________________________

Oh, that's right - Wiccans say "blessed be," not "be well". Ooops... living in Holland does tend to cause religious-knowledge-atrophy.

Posted by frame609 on 2005-06-02 16:23:40 +0000
Fuckin' Wiccans, man. I'm serious.

Posted by rladew on 2005-06-02 17:24:56 +0000
"That shit Would Be Sick!" agreed! Did anyone see TP on TV when they re-aired on Bravo? During that syndicated run, there were brief creepy Log Lady introductions to all the episodes.... _______________________________

Damn you all. Now I must watch the entire series again. Damn you. (Blessed (Be) Well), FtY

I LLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOVe the Log Lady! And cherry pie. And oversized chess pieces. And psychotics middle-aged women who think they're back in high school.

I'd love to do a Twin Peaks night but I imagine it would be hard to organize. We could all pick a night on our own and then discuss each episode here at the end of the week. Wait...no...that just queer. "I'm as blank as a fart"

Since I was harboring the idea that FtY was in fact pamsterdam, I'm thoroughly confused.

Can I dress up as Julee Cruise and sing "The Nightingale"? _______________________________

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-06-03 07:47:59 +0000
Aha, yes, I could see that. To tell the truth, now I'm confused. Especially if your original assumption that FtY is female is true. I mean, I don't know any other woman who would refer to getting a facial... Maybe FtY is me! Maybe I have an alternate personality! I hope she's prettier & smarter than this one.

I'm about to start drooling and chasing my own tail, here!!! Miriam, you're the top (you're the Coliseum). Yes, you're the top (you're the Louvre Museum)! xxx

Miriam is not an asshole! Miriam is a magical creature with tinkling laughter and a fabulous new haircut! ...so I hear.

Posted by tgl on 2005-06-03 17:57:41 +0000
I think it has to do with the "block" system. The creators wanted to make sure whatever important information is held in blocks over here on the righthand side will be visible. I don't have any right handed content blocks, maybe I can remove the width constraint.
