completely sane.

I've got Don Cherry's "mu" first part on in the living room and I've downloaded two tracks from the Big Bear debut on Monitor Records coming through here on the computer. I hope I was doing something very important to miss the Oxes and Big Bear last May 1st at the Middle East. Next chance is July 6th with Helms. http://www.bigbearbigbear.com OK, this stuff might be purely Converge/Cave-In derived dreck, but I like it.

2004.05.01 @ the Middle East in Cambridge, MA w/ Helms, Oxes, and Height + Bow & Arrow Oops, that's 2004. I think I _was_ at that show. They did play April 30th of this year.

Don Cherry's Mu: I've not heard this one... whats yr impression? I was just listening to the 'Symphony of the Improvisers" (Blue Note) the other day... Cherry is the man! I think July 6th I'll need to come out of hiding. Being a dad makes me (err almost) as socially reclusive as Jandek... _______________________________

After one listen... dang... Give me another week. It was good. How about that for a lame-o review?

http://dictionary.lockergnome.com/find/word/mu/ Mu. Say it twice; it's hilarious.

http://sudo.3.pro.tok2.com/Quest/cards/D/DonCherry/Mu1_x.html Brilliant Action is a little jarring. I don't care for Blackwell's drumming on this track, Blackwell and Cherry don't seem to be in sync. Amejelo is great. Just enough melody. Cherry hits the flutes. "Face 2" after lunch tomorrow.

Jazz Actuel: v/a 3xcd The Only thing I have on Jazz Actuel and damn is it good... The Paul Bley Piano-only version of Ornette Coleman's 'Ramblin' alone is worth the price of admission. The Thurston Moore liner notes, artwork, and awesome mix of Art Ensemble / Sun Ra , Sonny Sharrock throw it over the edge.... _______________________________

I got the previously mentioned Don Cherry album and Pharoah Sander's "Pharoah's First" which is also on Actuel, I think. Let's hear it for Actuel! Which seems to be the original label for these fine releases. They seem to be related to Get Back which does a bunch of Sun-Ra reissues (er, original issues?), and who (Get Back) is also starting to do classic rock (noticed a bunch of Black Sabbath reissues at Twisted Village on Saturday). Just a moment while rladew and I have a private reverie about Twisted Village... OK. Something about 180 grams of virgin vinyl.

180G is the balls! My belt driven turntable sucks though :( One of these days Im really going to have to jump to direct drive (a weighted tone arm wouldn't hurt either) _______________________________

I believe sonically speaking, belt drives are superior, as there is more seperation between the motor and the needle. Direct drives are better for scratching and durability, and typically moderately priced, while one can spend $29 to $5,000 for a belt drive....

really? I feel like my Kenwood is always a tad bit faster than the correct speed (remember, Bizquig, when we were listening to the Talking Heads?). Maybe its not a piece of crap belt driven - just a piece of crap... _______________________________

For listening, the belt drive is desirable. Don't try to create a scene by scene response to "Skratch" though. Some day, a Rega P2: Rega P2
