Home, Home in My Range

So, I think I may be a very lucky woman. The first place I called about this morning turned out to be right around the corner from my sister's house, where I'm staying. Seriously, it's the first driveway on the right as you leave her street. The place is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath duplex with hardwood floors, living/dining room, eat-in kitchen, carport, shared storage shed (wavy metal), HUGE front and back yards, lots of trees and a TON of sunlight. Oh, and it has a washer/dryer and a dishwasher. It's a 5 minute drive to work, a 1 minute drive to my sister, a 4 minute drive to my grandparents, and depending on traffic, a 20-50 minute drive to my brother's place. Honestly, I love it and think I'm going to get it. The management company wants me to take it, and it's been empty for 3 months. That means it stinks from the humidity and several of the windows are stuck shut. Oh, it also has central heat/ac. And a two ceiling fans. Hot damn! I'm psyched. Dad is going to look at it tomorrow morning with me, and then I'll go put down a deposit and start arranging for the utilities to be turned on mid-August. Oh, and they're giving me the place for $25 less than what they listed it as. Not that it's a huge savings, but when you're making pennies, they count. Besides, it costs less than what I'm paying now...and what I was paying before my rent was raised a while back. Another bonus: they mow the grass and occasionally trim the trees...which are awesome. THere are enormous hibiscus bushes that are more like trees in the back, and a tree with these cool hanging vines, too. AND, they said I could put in a garden. I'm already trying to figure out where to put the compost heap! I went to see another place closer to Vanderbilt, but it's in a dingy apartment complex nestled in a beautiful neighborhood where a lot of profs live. The place there is $5 more than the duplex, but it includes water and is closer to young people and some semblence of a day/night life. Dad's going to check that out with me, too. This is SO exciting!

I'm available for Worm Bin consultations.

That is SO going to happen! I was reading up on what worms work best in an old issue of Organic Gardening that was lying around on my toilet tank. I think I may just start a pile in a back corner of the yard, though.

Took my dad to see the place this morning. He thought it was cute, but was worried about drainage and the possibility of moisture in the house. I don't think it'll be much of a problem. Then again, they need to fix the tin roof over the carport, and re-hang the screen door out back, and unstick the windows and repaint/clean the kitchen walls, ceiling and cabinets. I think living in my dingy apartment for 3 years has spoiled me for wanting to move into something that's already in good shape. Off to sign the lease in a few.

Here's a map to my place. My sister lives at 227 Haverford. Work is at the corner of Percy Warner Blvd and Memphis-Bristol Hwy.

Wow, you're in rural America, where the satellite map says, "We're sorry but we don't imagery at this zoom level for this region." Am I jealous...?

Suburbs...not rural. Then again, My new place probably sits on at least 1/2 an acre. By the way, the hibiscus and crape myrtle trees are my faves. There's some kind of fruit tree that my dad thinks is a walnut, but I'm not convinced. In the carport are several large garbage cans full of beer bottles. Dad made a comment that musicians must live there. Good guess, Dad...I'm in f'in Nashville!

And it's down the road from this gem. Yup, I'm gonna live near an historic plantation. This ain't Knoxville, kids!
