Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists of all time:

Link is here. Go!

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2005-08-14 16:22:46 +0000
Zappa at 45 and Trey Anastasio at 73, yet Eric Clapton at #4? Embarrasing.... I like the unexpected Richard Thompson call at #19, but do I know who James Burton is, rounding out the top 20...? Just looked him up -- Nope, did not know who James Burton was...

Danny Gatton is better than Mick Ronson? Is there no justice? So wrong.

Will Look at the list later. I thought it would first be fun to name drop who I think would deserve to be there in no particular order (free form / brainstormin' type of thing) -Derek Bailey -Grant Green -Buckethead -Carlos Santana -Steve Albini (BQ eat yr heart out) -Pete Townshend -Jimi Hendrix -Vernon Reid -Greg Ginn - Eddie Hazel -Pat Metheney -Wes Montgomery -David Byrne -Eric Clapton -Page Hamilton -Bill Frisell (going to see him Tuesday night in Northhampton... whew!) -Marc Ribot -Nels Cline -Otomo Yoshihide -John Mclaughlin -Jimmy Page -Adrian Belew -Reeves Gabrels -Johnny Greenwood -Ian Mackaye -Elvis Costello - Leadbelly -Frank Zappa -Eric Johnson -Eugene Chadbourne -Alex Lifeson -Leo Kottke -Muddy Waters -Johnny Marr (Im sure I could think of 72 or so others, but this will have to do for now...) _______________________________

Damn, that's much longer than the Hip Tanaka drummer list.

Rich, we can still be friends even though you didn't give D. Boon the shoutout.

James Burton IS an incredible guitarist. Most notably played guitar for Elvis during the fat years. See "Via Satelite From Hawaii" He's the man.... "I'm not gonna rock the boat, rockin' the boat's a drag. What you gotta do is Sink the boat!" - Brother Putney

Wasn't this "news" like 3 years ago?

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2005-08-15 14:09:17 +0000
Wasn't Rolling Stone a "music" magazine?

Rory stopped posting here, but I know that besides these arguments about the canon of rock history piss him the fuck off, he would be visibly uspet to see the exclusion of a Mr. Ian Mackaye.

I am psyched that they decided to put on the stooges guitarist and Greg Ginn. Thet are both totally sloppy and SICK. Who cares about the blues anyway?

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2005-08-15 19:11:38 +0000
Jeff Beck at # 14!!! Fucking Jeff Beck!!! He was the worst guitarist in a bad band... I even have one of his albums. He sucks. Hum something he wrote -- Do it, I fucking triple dog dare you!!!

Big ups to Swope, btw. Whaddup!

I like how they put two people from the same band "tied" for two slots: 33 & 34 Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth 59 & 60 Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien of Radiohead 92 & 93 Fred "Sonic" Smith, Wayne Kramer of the MC5 No one guitarist could be considered individually without the other. --- What up, 10D? Still got that "Guiterrorist" tape?

Posted by frame609 on 2005-08-15 21:10:17 +0000
I like how they put Lee Renaldo first. Thurston hates that shit.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-08-15 21:19:20 +0000
I got rid of all my tapes years ago... However, Dawn picked a lot of them. I wonder if she had the taste to take Guiterrorist.

Not alphabetical is completely harsh RE: manhood. --- Did I not read carefully or is there not one woman on the list? While I'll go along with what bq3k says about laughable PC gender based inclusions and would not think that the Deal sister should make the list... but no women? Since men play guitars in order to get laid, shouldn't a woman playing guitar be considered qualitatively differently? A woman can always get laid (presumably), so she doesn't need to overcompensate with quitar heroics. Did men decide this list? Maybe it should be titled: Top 100 Guitarist We Think Get Laid The Most.

On second thought, I'm completely right.

Um, I just realized this was from the magazine, and not about the 100 people who were fill-in guitarists for The Rolling Stones.

I have the same birthday as Thurston. I could say something starsign-related about being a brat and needing to be the center of attention, but I'll just leave it at that.

Unless there's something I don't know about Joan Jett, tgl, a woman made it to 87.

Posted by tgl on 2005-08-19 02:38:55 +0000
Thank you! She's a hasbian, though, right?

Posted by frame609 on 2005-08-19 05:19:43 +0000
Honor! Where you been?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-08-19 07:46:26 +0000
She's totally a LESbian. She's a lesbian the way Boy George is gay. People in the "know" knew back in the day (bisexual my ass! - not literally), but they are completely out now. So Joan was also playing guitar to get chicks to sleep with her. Whooo!

I was communing with nature up at trescutt and shotgunning beers with pchippy. The weather was fan-fuckin'-tastic this year, btw. Sorry tgl, it only rained one night/morning the whole time. Dawn made great frickin crab muniere with crabs he collected, as well as one with mussels (the crabs were wicked puny though, so there were only four servings which went to the crab pickers--once again proving that friendly sacrifice pays off in the end). I did miss lobster night, though, since I had to come back early to be a bridesmaid. Although I've been promised by the bride that her bouquet is going to explode in the air and shower the crowd with pinata like gifts.
