Sick of the NFL yet?

# Sean Salisbury (Gary Busy's long lost brother?) already lost his voice. # Nike has a black and white ad, culminating with a "One, two, three, Woof!" (Who's going for the "gansta-jock" market more: the NBA or the NFL? I'm waiting for Dr. Dre to redo the Monday Night intro, which would be cool if he brought in MC Ren or Arabian Prince.) # Steven A. Smith is commentating on football. (Why did he name a show after the meaningless space filling phrase "Quite frankly?" If you're going to do it, go all out with "You know what I'm sayin'.") # Al Michaels will be paired with Joe Theisman for Monday Night Football. No further comments here. # More rule changes. # And Terrel Owens is still alive. Who has a gun? A rusty knife? Arsenic? Let's hope college football doesn't get too annoying... Let's Go Bruins!!!

This is the year the Bruins do it, right? Thornton said as much on Sports Final last night.

Football is awesome. American football and the NFL specifically are really messing things up...

College football, wherein any given game, if you're lucky you might see one player with enough skill to make it on the professional level. Sign me up! U. of Oregon Ducks vs. Fresno State Bulldogs 9/17!

Your argument is based on the presumption that the skill level of players at the professional level is a draw. Not sure it is.

True... but, there's some serious whittling down of talent from college to pros. Not everybody's wheat, but there's less chaff.

I agree that any given NFL player has a greater skill level than any given NCAA player. While skill of players is a part of the interest... Is the NFL more popular now, than in the 70s, because the level of skill is greater, or because of more mundane reasons, like marketing? I could see myself watching Canadian football games if it were part of a weekly ritual for our social group. That, and, I'd have to be living in Calgary or some other god-forsaken place. College ball is exciting to watch despite this difference. Although, I would only ever waste time watching a UM game. I'd guess that Bill Quigley only makes time for ND games. So, alumni status is definitely part of the enjoyment. I'm down for a roadtrip to Durham.

If all we need is a weekly ritual, Broomstones Curling in Wayland is an excellent hideaway, they have TV's for watching sporting events, a viewing room over the 8 sheets, curling, and $2 drafts for members. Let's all sign up!

Curling!

Actually, Bill doesn't necessarily watch only Notre Dame games. He's a bandwagoneer. When Tyrone Willingham stepped in and won his first eight games, Dad watched that entire season. When Ty tanked it, Dad stopped caring. Same thing with Lou Holtz back in the 80s. When they were kicking ass, go South Bend! When they weren't so hot, whatever.

I had this really great idea about how skill of the athlete is not related to enjoyment of the game that I got while in the shower. I've forgotten it. Alas. Maybe it was similar to the bandwagoneer reasoning. I've watched a lot more Pats post-2001 than I did pre-2001. Who's a Rams fan?

The game that you got in the shower? Yow!

Copy Editor! Is there a copy editor in the house?

Posted by tgl on 2005-08-18 18:50:02 +0000
I'm remembering now: My Dad loves football. He still goes to Concord High School games occasionally. I think there are wagon-based reasons for watching games and there are love-of-the-game reasons. There are probably other reasons, but appreciation of skill isn't necessarily a part of the two I've mentioned. I don't know, you can appreciate the skill of high school players knowing that, they are high school players. ---- I need to get back to home improvement. The self-regulating nature of posting from work is sorely needed around the house...
