The Official 2005 RS.N Magic Number Thread

So both the Sox and Yankees have played 122 games this season, with 40 to go. Here's how we look: BOS 71-51 NYY 67-55 The Sox are 4 games ahead. Any combination of 35 Sox wins and/or Yankees losses nets us the division title.

(The wild card is a lot of fun this year- Cleveland and the aforementioned Yankees are both half a game behind the A's. I'd love to see the Indians get in there.)

Magic numbers are gay. RIOT is where it's at. I will settle for nothing less that the MFY not making the playoffs.

Maybe Schil as starter will be beter than Schil as closer. I'll refrain from more Alec Baldwin fagens, thank you. _______________________________

Bronson looked great in his first inning. Gonzalez has been pitching well, too.

So the Sox are three games behind Chicago for best record in the A.L.

Magic number is 21 following tonight's win (Bronson! Cora!) and the MFY's 5-4 victory over Tampa Bay. Three games vs. the aforementioned MFY start on Friday. Oh, and today is the anniversary of the beginning of the 1978 Boston Massacre.

RIOT says 20 to clinch first. 25 Games Left.

Posted by frame609 on 2005-09-08 02:55:57 +0000
Hmmm. They're up by four with 25 left- is 20 to clinch a first place tie, maybe?

Posted by tgl on 2005-09-08 03:08:35 +0000
It probably considers the number of games left with New York. There are six left. So, if they win 20, which would include beating New York once, they clinch. Put another way, if the five they lost were to New York, then they'd still make take first place. Is that right or am I d-r-u-k?

We play the Yankees 6 times (sept 9,10,11 and sept 30, Oct 1,2), so if we only lose 5, we must beat the Yankees once. ROIT (and tgl) again are correct...

Per the RIOT web page: The first place clinch number is the most similar to the commonly reported magic number. If the team wins this number of additional games, it is guaranteed to finish in at least a tie for first place in its division . 'At least a tie' is the key thing here. The RIOT number to clinch at least a tie is 20, 24 for the Yankees. Add one to clinch not a tie, dig? The magic number is 21.

Indeed, to clinch not a tie is 21, however, usually, when the RIOT and magic numbers are different it is not due to this, it is the head to head factor. In September it can get interesting, as the RIOT numbers and magic numbers can be off by a few.
