Paging Pamsterdam

So, I sorta forgot that I have to telnet into the email account that I've been emailing you from--could you please leave your number for me at the hotel asterisk? 626 23 96/624 17 68.

You crazy. :-) I just left a message for you at the hotel. The conversation went like this (albeit in Dutch): Me: Good morning, I'm looking for a newly-checked-in guest of yours, by the name of Honor. Receptionist: I'm sorry, we have no one here by that name. Me: Um... she's in your only one-person room, I think. Receptionist: Nope. Me: Oh! Um... this is a little strange... I don't know her last name. Honor is her first name. She's a friend of friends of mine. Receptionist: Oh. Oh, yes, I see her on the list now. She's in our only one-person room. Me: Right. Receptionist: She's American. Me: Yep. Is she there? Receptionist: Um... no, she isn't in the hotel now. Me: ....can I leave a message? Receptionist: Oh. Okay. This is hilarious. Welcome to Amsterdam! Welkom in Amsterdam!

We have contact. Let the madness begin!

Hey - anyone here know if Honor's a vegetarian? I'm putting together a list of suggested dining establishments & interesting sites. If she's a veggie then I have some very good suggestions...

Honor has the distinction of being the only female invited to gentleman-only meat binges, as she makes us all feel like pussies in the wake of her carniverocity.

'tis true, 'tis true. She also wins the spicy food contest with good regularity. ________________ --Feminazi

I really thought I was making up a word with "carniverocity"; a clever portmanteau of carniverous and ferocity, but, alas, it's merely a misspelling.

Hot damn! Oh, great!!! She is getting Indonesian tonight, man. If you're pulling my leg, you are in such big trouble...

Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-08-30 13:29:44 +0000
As portmanteaux are one of my favorite linguicisms, and I'm rather proud of my googling for their definition, I have now made my first edit to Wikipedia.

Heh heh heh. 10D, I like your style. carnivoracity \Car*niv`o*rac"i*ty\, n. Greediness of appetite for flesh. [Sportive.] --Pope.

Mmm, cozy little spicy Indonesian place or the tiny hole-in-the-wall meat-arium, I wonder?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-08-30 13:57:59 +0000
Oh man, now I'm a junkie... I've added two more portmanteaux to the list, these dealing with facial hair.

You = going to Wikipedia jail.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-08-30 14:30:46 +0000
C'mon! Those are totally legit! The people are better off for my benefediting.

Molestache? 10D, did you ever read that "Hipster Guide" that came out a couple of years ago, which essentially consisted of the author's own personal lingo for which he hoped to gain popularity with the gullible masses of Hot Topic shoppers?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-08-30 14:37:55 +0000
tgl got that for his birthday last year... I only flipped through it, though. Credit: molestache == stoops.

I did. Completely striking out at the mall, BTW.

Indonesian it was. Rijstafel is my new favorite food (at least until my next meal). It's like dim sum, except heavier, and with less deep fried stuff. And no little carts. But you get your own personal pseudo-chafing dish thingys. I love Pamsterdam. Off to the Van Gogh (g is like ch in chanukah!) before I go to the exhibit on evil (appropriately enough at the museum of the Dutch colonial past), after which I plan to cram in the joods historische museum (1/2 triumphant, 1/2 horrifying, as per usual), and then off to conference heaven!

Hey! Hot damn! Glad you liked it. It's another beautiful day in Pamsterdam, so enjoy trotting around to the museums... On a somewhat humorous side-note - the museum of the Dutch colonial past was originally named (rather hopefully) The Museum of the Tropics (het Tropenmuseum). This becomes rather maacbre when you realise that the museum exists soley because of stuff the Dutch stole from their tropical colonies. Here is what they say about their "All About Evil" exhibit (a surprisingly clever play on the English name of the film All About Eve): All About Evil: Terrifying and intriguing. The root of all misery, utter disaster and every kind of bad luck. This exhibition tells the story of man's struggle against evil down the centuries. A story that spans all ages and countries, cultures and religions. Told in a spectacular setting full of devils and demons, seductive women and unusual objects from around the world (Editorial note: Which they stole). Descend into the world of Evil and discover famous personalities like Adam and Eve, Satan and Eshu, Eucalypta and Rangda, Kali and Darth Vader. I hope the conference opening is everything you could hope for, too.

How was your first evening of the conference, HtL?

Posted by Honar the librarian on 2005-09-01 06:20:55 +0000
Fine and dandy, except that I had a cup of coffee hoping to pep up for lecture, but only succeeded in sleeping through the first lecture, but being completely unable to fall asleep later on, when it really counted. Are we ready to rock and or roll tomorrow night?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-09-01 06:25:23 +0000
You bet your patootie we are! Ed's coming along, and bringing his friend Davey (formerly known as Dreadlockman, now known as Shornheadman). That is, provided Davey's babymama Tatiana lets him come... You still up for the outdoor film showing in Vondelpark? Maybe dinner beforehand?

Posted by Honar the librarian on 2005-09-01 06:29:14 +0000
sounds like a plan--I'll call you tomorrow.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-09-01 06:30:39 +0000
Excellent... (rubs hands together, Montgomery Burns-style)

Posted by tgl on 2005-09-01 14:17:56 +0000
I really feel like I'm attending a conference in The Netherlands too! Virtual Debauchery. Thanks for taking me along.

I have not yet fully discounted the possibility that this is my passive-agressive reaction to Boston-based Rideside folks discussing all the "hot action" going down. But I'd really like to believe that I'm just being inclusive! :-)

Posted by frame609 on 2005-09-01 17:35:35 +0000
You will note that my second hot action post drew a whopping zero responses. The H.A. is obviously in (P)Amsterdam.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-09-01 17:48:11 +0000
Clearly, there is an alternate Rideside reality in which I am temporarily Residing. Woah. Don't worry, Mike, I'll send the Hot Action straight back to ya when I'm done with it!
