A Rosetta Stone for Modern Jazz (Pardon the RAWK classification)

In April 2005, The NYT ran a story about the Library of Congress uncovering an undiscovered recorded concert from 1957 featuring John Coltrane and his quartet with Thelonious Monk. Can you imagine rummaging through a box of media only to find a pristine and as yet unknown concert between these two both in their prime? Jesus. I was spinning thru the Sirius dial this past weekend, and the classic jazz station played the concert pretty much in its entirety before its late September release on Blue Note. In addition, Sirius's host interviewed T.S. Monk Jr, Thelonious's younger percussionist son. T.S. recounted stories of his boyhood when Coltrane and Monk would woodshed/practice in the bedroom next to his (!) in their tiny NYC apartment. I can't wait to hear this again. September 2005 is a good month to be a jazz entusiast.

correction: Monk's quartet. not Coltrane's _______________________________

Looks like I'm a day late on notification. ----- TRUE BLUE MUSIC www.truebluemusic.com One of the most exciting releases in jazz, Thelonious Monk - At Carnegie Hall (with John Coltrane) will be released on September 27th. Until the end of September, we have put this release at a Special Sale Price along with a new Ray Charles boxed set, 6 new RVGs and a number of DVDs including an 8 DVD Jazz Casual collection. NEW RELEASES Thelonious Monk - At Carnegie Hall (with John Coltrane) (Sale Price $14.98) link A heretofore unknown November 1957 Carnegie Hall concert taped in excellent fidelity has been discovered. What makes this news earth-shattering is the existence of two 25-minute sets by the legendary Monk Quartet with John Coltrane, Ahmet Abdul-Malik and Shadow Wilson. And the music more than delivers on its promise. The band had been playing together every night for five months and were connecting on an amazing level. Pianistically, Monk will shock you and Coltrane is focused and impassioned throughout. Available on September 27. If you preorder with other items, we will ship together unless otherwise instructed so as not to incur an additional shipping and handling charge. A 200-gram LP of this album will be made available through Mosaic Records by the end of October/early November for $30.

Going to be a sick record. I go Coltrane over Miles, but Mingus over Monk. And no, I will not be shelling out $30 for the 200 grams vinyl...

Totally Fagened the Monk/Coltrane record tonight to lackluster results.

who was the audience where the Fagen failed? (and i'll admit, I scratched my head with the "unplugged .jpg". Is that supposed to be a drink coaster? I can smell the feces-doling w/ the 1000 hurts pic, though...) _______________________________

More of a commentary on Rich's rampant drug use than anything.

it is true that I have split / sniffed many lines off of the top of the 'paranoid' cover. other faves: *** *** = word of warning: resin / debris will stick to the embossed / unequal surface area of "Master Of Reality", but then again, its a trade off worth having if yr listening to 'Lord Of This World' _______________________________
