Come on Feel the Noise

So, Jess(ica) (old coworker who was passing through Nashville on her way to San Fran) and I bought tickets to see Lucinda Williams this past Tuesday night at the Ryman Auditorium. That afternoon, we went to a hip neighborhood to stroll around and window shop. Stopped in Fido to use the restroom, and as I was passing one of the booths I did a double-take...Jake Brennan was sitting there! I stopped and chatted for a few minutes and was introduced to his friend, Angelo the local songwriter, who I gave my contact info to...saying, "I don't have any friends in town, so please call me if anything interesting is going on." Turned out that Jake's friends were opening for Lucinda Williams that night, and he was going to the show, too. Later that night at the Ryman... The show was great! CC Adcock was the opener. They were fantastic. Met them during the break. Were going to hang out, but Lucinda played for 2 1/2 hours straight and we were exhausted. . . . Going to see Matisyahu at the Exit/In tonight. Should be a blast. I think every hip Jew in town (over 18) will be there.

Okay, here's what I have to say about Matisyahu. Hot damn, he's one hot Baal Shuva! He's a reggae, beat-box, hip-hop, rapper. Also happens to be an Orthodox Jew. So much energy, so much to say. The first song was half in Yiddish, half in English. There was a mix to the crowd: rednecks, old and young Jews, Vanderbilt students, dirty hippies, etc. One drunk redneck behind me decided it would be a good idea to grab my ass when the show started. He was wrong. I caught three of his fingers in my right hand and nearly broke them as I pulled him close so he could hear me scream, "Get your fucking hand off my God damn ass!" He said, "I thought you were someone else." "Like hell you did." I turned back around, shaken at my own reaction, when he tapped me on the shoulder and extended a hand. I then said, "I'm not trying to be friends with you; I'm trying to enjoy the show." I turned back to face the stage and within seconds he disappeared. I was proud of myself for using the self-defense tactics I learned a couple of years ago, but didn't think the very nice guy I'd just met who was standing next to me was very impressed. Then again, he was 20. The rest of the show was great. Many drunks, including the girl who kept buying everyone around us drinks...on her ex-boyfriend's credit card. Heard she racked up more than $400 that night. Sweet revenge, huh? Of course, I had a coke early on, but nothing after that. Moral of the story, check out Matisyahu. Oh, yeah. In the middle of the beat-box 20 minute marathon, I called BQ3K.

Feh, Rosen's article read to me like the usual cooler-than-thou fare I'd expect to see in a mean-spirited photocopied indie zine. I like Matisyahu. And not just because he's cute. Honest.

Um, thanks. As a tribal representative, I take that as a compliment.

A neoliberal take. I'm interested to hear Live At Stubb's, and also the latest, if only because I consider Bill Laswell closer to G-d than any Hasid.

I don't know much about that guy but his music is bad... Like toe curling...Like I'd rather have to listen to Sublime. Sorry.

I'llprobably agree with you camp, Rory. I'm more of a snarkster from the Slate camp than a wonkish oh-yeah-we-review-music-too pundit from the Prospect camp.
