I Have Crossed the Line

Since Friday night, I have watched, in earnest, two baseball games. One was in the *gasp* National League. ---- Did Mariano Rivera ever bat in the eighth or ninth inning last night? I guess I could look it up. Torre had him batting third after putting in defensive replacements at the top of the eighth (Martinez at first, Williams in center, Mariano on the mound).

Rivera did not bat, and that was an astounding move. It was the second game I'd watched yesterday that a team ran out of position players. Fantastic. I respected Torre's move there. I really wanted to see Rivera bat. Am I the only one who watched the Astros-Braves game yesterday? Amazing. The Braves had one position player left, neither team had any bullpen, and Clemens had to come in to _pinch_hit_ in the 16th, before shutting down The Tribe in the 17th and 18th innings. When he led off batting in the bottom of the 18th, I'm sure the manager said to him, "It will be fucking awesome if you ended this right now." I've never seen a pitcher swing so heartily for the fences.

What a great word... heartily.

Smoltz was pissed afterwards- he was sayin' that he was tired of being on the losing end of some of the greatest games ever.

Sez Gammons to Smoltz: "If you ain't got the pitchin', honey, St. Christopher ain't got the time."

Consider the plight of Smoltz: How many times has he gone to the playoffs? Fourteen? How many of those years were with both Glavine AND Maddux, both in their primes? One ring to show for it. Boggles the mind.
