Love that Bowie album! The 1-2-3 punch of Modern Love, China Girl, and Let's Dance (whew!) I think Stevie Ray Vaughn (!) was either the studio or touring guitarist for this era of Bowie. I bought the 1999 Virgin cd remaster at a head shop in Nashua for $3 USD (yes, unfortunately it still has that patchouli stink) A recap of Bowie's guitar players throughout the years: -Mick Ronson! -Adrian Belew! -Stevie Ray Vaughn! -Reeves Gabriels! -Page Hamilton! shit, this guy is out of his gourd! Oh wait a minute, this thread is about vinyl: I have the 'Live in Philadelphia' fold out somewhere - the jacket transforms into this huge monolith of the Thin White Duke - Fantastic!

I taught a little Bowie yesterday. Yow!

Posted by tgl on 2006-02-03 02:50:55 +0000
What did you teach him?

Bend over- I'll show you!

OK, I definitely would've paid to see that.

Vinyl Junkies is a great book to read on that.

I am seriously in awe of your dollar-to-vinyl ratio!

you left out Earl Slick who played lead on "Station to Station", I love "Stay" 30 years later and I just picked up a re-edit of "Golden Years" that went over big at a New Years party.

Robert Fripp, as well.

I got "Let's Dance" from the basement, or was it the 3rd floor telephone table stack, of the Malbert.

Stevie Ray was indeed the studio guitarist.

Wednesday's Q prompted me to look for mixers on eBay. Vestax PMC-05??

Posted by Miriam on 2006-02-03 16:52:55 +0000
Late Wednesday night I listened to a crazy line-up of vinyl: Appalachian folk tunes (lots of banjo and dulcimer) Torero (bullfighting music) Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book" (so unbelieveably incredible I made calls about it) Maurice Chevalier (can't remember the name of the album but it had a French side and an English side...I listened to the French) Very good for cleaning my apartment up a little.

Vestax is the shit. I would have gotten one (instead of my Nu-Mark) if the guitar center had them in stock... oh, well.

I just realized the other day that "China Girl" is a cover of a Stooges tune that Bowie helped out with.

I'd try Craigs list before Ebay so you can test before buying, I have Pioneer 707, but more expensive than Vestax or Nu-Mark. I have an old Vestax and the sound pales compared to better mixers.

I think Brian Eno played a little gitar on the Heroes and Lodger albums.

How little? Like a ukelele? Mandolin? Lute?

Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-02-05 22:32:26 +0000
can't believe I left out Fripp, Eno and Slick WTF was I thinking? I spose it doesn't matter - we seem to have a RSN consensus (or as close to one that we'll ever have) that Bowie is the poop!
