SNL '06

I know it's the in thing to bash SNL, and yearn for the days of Myers, Miller, and Carvey -- or even Belushi, Radner, and Chase -- but I am really digging SNL this year, or at least the 4 or 5 I've seen this season. Interestingly some of the best stuff has been the taped videos and digital shorts, yet the Weekend Update has never been better, now that Jimmy "Break character" Fallon has left. Natalie Portman was awesome tonite (although there were 2 repeat fake adverts), and Andy Samberg is gradually becoming one of my favorite SNL contributors of all time. Did you see his Viking outfit in Natalie's version of "Easy-Duz-It"? I loved it.

To avoid using any proprietary eponyms that may ruffle feathers, I used digital video recording technology to watch this at my leisure. I will look forward to watching it. I am also a huge Samberg fan. Also hugely anticipating V for Vendetta in case you haven't looked @ RSN over the past, say, year or so...

I too enjoyed the "Digital Short" this weekend. Seems like that's their best idea so far. Hope they don't overdue it. Total agreement on the Weekend Update. All the fake ads were repeats, as far could tell.

I just saw the Natalie Portman rap. Loved it.

I thought the Portman rap was kinda funny - but (in terms of beat, background music and pacing at least) it was dangerously close to replicating the funnier 'Chronicles Of Narnia' rap beween Parnell and Samberg. The hit in my eyes was the Smigel "Belated Afrcan American History" animation. Bryant Gumbel rescuing the secondary "token" black heroes from the Fruit Of Islam @ the Million Man March was hysterical.

was the Baby toupee thing old? I hadn't seen that one.. The Rockwell smoke detector bit was definitely stale.

Chronicles of Narnia was funnier and caught me off guard, but I can't take away too much from Portman's work. The interview cut aways with Parnell? The viking costume? Good stuff!

I've seen the baby toupee ad before.

Decent show tonight. Not particularily funny, as Matt Dillon isn't very funny. But I like him, and enjoyed the show, though it was sub-par. Another repeat advert with the feet shoes and Samberg, but another Samberg led Digital short, which was almost a 1-2-3 bartender style joke. Kinda weird... "Well, I know that's not you, because that guy's wearing red gloves..."??? WTF? Arctic Monkeys rocked, though I am biased, as I picked up their album "Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not" because it was playing at Newbury Comics last week, and I dug it. I hadn't done that in a couple years. Arctic Monkeys are sorta "White Stripes" with a 2nd guitar... and a bass... and good fast drummer.
