Computer Partitions

If I put MAC OS-X on a partition on my Mac G4 running 9.0.4, will I be able to retrieve files on other partitions? Or will it erase the files on other partitions when I install OS-X? Other advice...?

I"m no Mac expert, but since you haven't got a reply, I'll give you the info I have, which is not enough to answer your question fully. 1) Is is possible to have different OS's on separate partitions without losing any data? Yes. 2) Can OS X get to files on other partitions? Yes. 3) Does Mac's OS X installer overwrite other partitions? I don't know.

If your hard drive has multiple partitions, then you can install Mac OS X on a single partition without affecting data on the others. Mac OS X should be able to read data from 9.0, maybe not vice versa. If you only have the one partition, I think it's unlikely that you can create additional partitions without losing the entire disk. **I'm making these statements without specific knowledge of the Mac OS X installation procedure. No warranty implied or given. Your mileage may vary.** I've been doing backups to strongspace.com.

Strongspace would be cool if I could get my computer online. My problem is that I have a DVD burner, but I run Mac OS 9.0.4 which doesn't support Toast 5.0 (or any other burner aps I can find). Plus Verizon doesn't support "dated" operating systems (almost 5 years) anymore.

Thanks for the 1st reply, Tommy. You are making me feel more confident about my next OS move...

Last Mac OS question? I finally got Mac OSX 10.3 running on my computer, and it seems as though everything on my 9.0.4 partitions survived. However, when I try to open an older file that I created with OS 9.0.4, I get "error -2, please install Mac Classic to read files." So do I install a THIRD operating system like OS 9.1, which will then be editable on OSX? Seems a bit like bullshit to me.
