'For him, Updike is "both chronicler and voice of probably the single most self-absorbed generation since Louis XIV."'
This ties in with my ruminations last night at Q. I feel I need to listen to the "classics" of Jazz before getting into contemporary Jazz; while at the same time I have a slight disdain for Booomer-era Rock and Roll. The Rolling Stones for instance. They are a fine musical group, no doubt, however the popularity and longevity of their music is in no small way connected with sheer numbers of the Baby Boomer generation. Maybe it's just generational jealousy or Gen X cycnicism, but it seems Baby Boomers claim the definitive description of "teenage rebellion", which is sort of chafing.

As I've been listening to the Rolling Stones, though, something that I hadn't done until recently, I have found that they're really fucking good. you just have to get through the crowd to hear it.

out of our heads, beggars banquet, goats head soup, some girls, sticky fingers, let it bleed, exile on main street...

It's not that the Rolling Stones are unworthy, it's that the culture spawned by the Baby Boomers still has a death grip on pop culture. It's inescapable AND the Boomers love to remind you how it's inescapable.
unescapable?
