As 10D pointed out, it's just as geeky as D&D.

The Lynn Gin Tasters of the Whirled Baseball Classic start the fantasy leagure draft today. What's my strategy?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-03-21 13:46:21 +0000
The Adirondack Chairs will crush you.

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-21 14:01:38 +0000
Literally.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-03-21 14:36:06 +0000
Get two ace starters in the first few rounds, don't take a closer until like the seventh. Is it 5x5 or Rotisserie?

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-21 15:23:57 +0000
Looks like people are picking sluggers right now... I believe it's Rotisserie.

Posted by jbcardinale on 2006-03-21 15:42:33 +0000
know nuthin' about fantasy baseball...but take the Coz tomorrow nite

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-03-21 15:58:53 +0000
Sluggers tend to be pretty easy to come by. If you have a chance to grab a good offensive producer for 2B/SS, it's a plus. If not, don't sweat it.

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-21 17:57:49 +0000
Not rotisserie rules, but Yahoo! Head-to-Head. Here are the scoring categories: R, H, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, APP, IP, W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP Looks like fielding is not considered?

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-21 17:58:41 +0000
Oh, but I need to make sure I have all the positions filled...

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-21 18:43:53 +0000
Pitching!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-03-22 00:13:55 +0000
I'm very confident in my pick.

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-22 01:35:31 +0000
I think you should continue to make selections contrary to all convential wisdom. Mariano's not exactly a wasted first round pick, is it?

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-03-22 02:31:50 +0000
Got some rosters for us?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-03-22 08:54:39 +0000
We're putting the "slow" in "slow draft"... as of right now, we're not through the first round... some managers aren't on the ball to take their pick and a time limit hasn't been instituted... So far, for the folks in the league you know, TGL has Vladdy, my brother has Ortiz, Chris (The Commish) has Santana and I have Rivera. To address TGL's comment, no, this was not a wasted pick. Based on the stats we're playing with, relievers are arguably more valuable than starters, and, as far as relievers go, closers are the tits. Rivera is the top ranked pitcher in our league, and the #6 player overall. Wait until you see my second round pick.

It's 9:42 AM EDT and we are waiting...

Hey, sysadmin! Fix the timestamps!

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-22 14:47:53 +0000
Ah...

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-03-22 14:53:05 +0000
Closers, anyone? Bwa ha ha

Posted by tgl on 2006-03-22 15:03:22 +0000
Unbelievable. I'll have to settle for Trevor Hoffman. --- So there's no requirement that a roster be "playable"? If your whole team is closers (which also means they get coffee...) that's OK?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-03-22 15:09:35 +0000
Nah, I'm going to need to field a team at some point, and many would caution me that my offence is going to suffer. But my strategy is closer to that which BH recommended, get yourself some aces. I speculate that closers are more important than Aces, and they are fewer and farer between.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-03-22 15:10:13 +0000
Took me a minute to get the Glen Gary Glen Ross reference...

With all due respect: The Chairs lack an ace- and this coming from a guy who has Cliff Lee on BOTH fantasy league teams. Plenty of relief, and a few starters who seem perpetually on the brink of breakout success. Hitting seems a little light- Sexson is a perpetual injury risk. Gin Tasters have a very good starting five, and both power and speed. Thome and Glaus are both injury risks, too.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-01 21:42:56 +0000
I believe, that due to the statistics our league is using, relievers are more important than starters. So I spent earlier picks getting a stronger pen. I also think stolen bases are disproportionally valuable, hence Figgins and Reyes... we'll see how it weighs in, Tasters and Chairs go head to head in week one.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-02 06:03:59 +0000
Your statistic-based system may hold weight- I'm interested to see how yr. season shakes down.

I am the Billy Beane of fantasy baseball

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-03 12:50:17 +0000
Currently, the Tasters are taking a seat! Granted, the Chairs are relying solely on the preformance of A.J. Eyechart.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-03 13:23:32 +0000
Overall, I think the Chairs are feeling tasty after last night:
  • The Tasters got a bad start from their ace.
  • The Chairs essentially have no games played, and have 2 hits and an RBI from their backup catcher.
  • The Chairs are awesomer.
  • The Chairs win the contest in the league to propose the first trade (will get shot down, Livan Hernandez for Tim Wakefield)

  1. Sabathia is not my ace. Did he start and only last 2.1 innings? Did he really earn an 11+ ERA?
  2. So I can just add players not currently on anyone's roster?
  3. The commish asked that the pitchers not be overly changed mid-week, does the same apply for the other positions?
  4. What's the difference between RP and P?
  5. Do I get points from somone listed as BN? How does that differ from UTIL?
  6. What the hell am I doing?

Ah ha. A +2 Vorpol bat!

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-03 19:09:47 +0000
This is brutal, my starting shortstop (Jimmy Rollins) needs a hit to keep is streak alive against my starting pitcher (Chris Carpenter).

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-03 19:20:24 +0000
My starting SS (Reyes) went 0/5, but his (my) closer got the win but my starter lost... I'm so confused. I think I'm unhappy about that.
