W1: Gin Tasters, Chairs

After two days, I think I understand how this works. We have 13 scoring categories, you get a point for amassing the best statistic in each category. The winner for the week is the one with the best of 13 statistics. After the CWS-Phil game on Sunday, I was up, 10-1. Now, after Opening Day, I'm at 9-4. We'll see if I slowly degenerate over the course of the week. One category I'm disappointed in is stolen bases, I'd expect Juan Pierre to be good for a couple a week (he had 57 last year). Currently, I'm trailing 0-1 in that category. There are already trading blocks being proposed, I'm not even sure what my roster is strong in yet. Maybe after a month. I can now see how Sabathia's horrible start was so horrible. All my starting pitchers started either Sunday or Monday. I'm left with a (hopeful) appearance of Trevor Hoffman to help me out in those pitching categories. Otherwise, it's Danys Baez to the rescue. I get a start out of Bronson Arroyo today... stay angry, bud!

The Chairs strategy was to draft players to win Saves, Appearances, Stolen Bases and OBP... so I have a lot of closers and leadoff guys. So the idea for me is that I load 4 categories and then only need to get 3 of the remaining 10 (there are 14 categories) and we break even. ERA and WHIP are practically random so I'll count a break even on those 2... Now I need to get 2 out of the remaining 8. With my leadoff guys I should have better odds than not on runs and hits... MoneyFantasyBall.

Sabathia is already on the DL. Yikes!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-04 16:44:19 +0000
May I recommend Esteban Loaiza?

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-04-04 16:51:42 +0000
"ERA and WHIP are practically random..." Huh? Could there possibly be a more resolute stat than WHIP? Isn't everything then random?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-04 16:58:35 +0000
I think there's a lot of sporatic activity, week to week, on those stats, which amoratize over the course of a season... same with batting average. Whereas OBP and SLG are more stable. I'm making this up. I speculate that if you throw any two groups of pitchers together in a given week, your odds of having a better combined ERA or WHIP are about 50/50.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-04 17:23:06 +0000
I missed the 'W' column, so far we're knotted up at one (1) a piece. I like my team in the hitting categories (R,H,RBI,OBP,SLG). I think Pierre and Rollins will deliver stolen bases (SB), with some help from Damon, Guerrero and Iguchi. My pitching looks dismal. I guess it's only been one day but after a start from each of my best starting pitchers, the ERA is around 11.5

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-04 17:26:11 +0000
Wait a month.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-04 18:40:17 +0000
This is ridiculous. Top of the 5th in the White Sox/Indians game and the Lynn Gin Tasters have home runs on both sides of the fence... and a walk! Chairs have 0/2 out of their back up catcher. I hope Politte comes in for relief, and Peyechart gets a grand slam for the win.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-04 18:41:41 +0000
Another run scored! A tough afternoon for the Chairs!

To anyone who has ever given me shit about posting fantasy baseball-related threads on this board: I give you this thread. Thank you.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 02:53:17 +0000
After today, I still hold my lead in K's but I can't see how I stand a chance with the 7 (!) pitching categories (APP, IP, W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP). While I have the edge in IP and K after 2+ days and APP are tied, I don't have enough relievers to keep those stats increasing through Friday. Especially when my ace closer (Hoffman) gets rained out. The commish doesn't want us messing with the pitching roster mid-week, is that right? What's wrong with grabbing a few guys since I don't seem to have as many pitchers designated "bench" as everyone else?

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 03:02:57 +0000
Unlike those who will remain nameless, if that's OK with Null Protocol and dawnbixtler, I try to refrain from making posts that express my boredom. I will take this thread. You are welcome. What are your stats looking mid-week? Are you in a head-to-head league as well?

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-05 04:28:37 +0000
I cannot make head or tail of either of the two Yahoo! leagues I'm in at the moment- not sure if it's head to head or cumulative or what. In the CBSSports league, I lead handily in all categories but RBI, HR and SB, of which I am down by one in each. Not fucking with the pitching defeats the purpose of having a daily league- that's why you do daily updates.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 13:05:22 +0000
The Commish doesn't want you to make excessive pitching _roster_ moves midweek. You can and should make pitching _lineup_ moves as much as you like. The problem is, there is nothing in our actual league setup to keep someone from cutting all their starters after they start, and then picking up whatever crappy starting pitchers are free agents and starting that day. Since there are lots of undrafted pitchers, someone could easily get a gazillion innings pitched, 5 starts a day, and most likely a ton of wins and strikeouts. Since we don't have negative stats, like losses, nor rate states like K/9, there would really be no penalty to doing this. The Commish has asked us not to be that guy.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 13:10:08 +0000
So is it OK that I just added Glavine today and Batista tomorrow? ---- Noticed you pulled even in the H category. 23 a piece!

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 13:13:34 +0000
Plus I lost the lead in RBI, luckily I picked up a SV. A prediction: The Tasters will cruise to victory this week. Lackey got shelled yesterday, eh?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 13:14:29 +0000
I think the commish would like you to make no more than 2 pitching roster changes a week... preferably one, so at the beginning of the week you pick your staff for that week. Who are you dropping to get Glavine and Batista?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 13:17:32 +0000
I had big days yesterday out of Richie Sexson and Geoff Jenkins...

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 13:46:38 +0000
That's the thing. Everyone has two or three people designated bench, whereas I only have Wood on the DL. I wasn't forced to drop anyone to add to the roster. Are we limited to 45-man rosters? We had 21 rounds in the draft, should I have added another 20 or so players last weekend?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 13:53:01 +0000
Prediction: Chairs 9-5 Tasters take: HR, RBI, SLG, IP, K Chairs take: R, H, SB, OBP, APP, W, SV, ERA, WHIP Look for big starts from Lee and Lowry today.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 13:53:18 +0000
Lowry tomorrow, actually.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-05 15:49:19 +0000
The roster changing is really limited to the first few weeks- people will snatch up people who get dropped pretty quickly once everyone gets established.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 16:35:38 +0000
You can only have two guys on the DL, which you do. You can only have 5 guys on the bench, which you do... you just happen to have 4 extra position players taking all the seats on your bench. Too bad you don't get offensive stats for your NL pitchers... Beer Canyon just knocked a dinger.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 17:59:54 +0000
So if I want more IP or APP I make more room for pitchers on the bench...

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 18:06:37 +0000
How does the stats work for someone designated BN rather than P? Or BN versus Util versus 1B for that matter?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-05 18:16:12 +0000
you don't get any credit for the guys on your bench.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 18:49:04 +0000
There really was no information on Yahoo! about any of this. Honest. Thanks, now I have to completely re-re-think my strategeries.

Posted by G lib on 2006-04-05 19:42:39 +0000
Freaks.

Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-04-05 19:55:42 +0000
I'm gonna brave a shellacking (intential k) and ask what a WHIP is...

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 19:56:38 +0000
Walks/Hits per Inning Pitched.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 20:41:15 +0000
The Cle/CWS game is going into extra innings, which gives me a greater chance at overcoming the Chairs (narrow) lead in hits. Since I got V. Martinez, J. Thome, and T. Iguchi.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-05 21:08:30 +0000
Damn Chairs have two active pitchers in that contest.

Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-04-05 23:14:07 +0000
do you get some of that info from the Earned Runs Avg?

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-06 12:39:07 +0000
Tasters have an insurmountable -- insurmountable! -- lead in H,R and HR. Competitive in RBI. I'd like to think we'll prevail in WHIP as well. I'll concede the SB category even though my two speediest players combined for 30% stolen bases than the Chairs' two speediest. Tasters have SLG,IP and K's in the bad as well. Bring it on! Tasters will prevail, 8-4! (We'll tie W and APP).

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-06 13:16:19 +0000
Those leads are _not_ insurmountable. Watch today's games. There are 4 more days this week. OK, I may have to concede runs, you're up by 10... but I'm claiming RBI. Chairs: 9-5

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-06 15:41:36 +0000
Oh. The week ends on the 9th. I thought I only had to hang on till Friday.

Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-04-06 18:00:20 +0000
boredom is awesome

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-06 18:20:09 +0000
I only have three activity batters today. Crikey.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-06 18:21:53 +0000
OK, I wasn't going to say anything, since the Chairs have some catching up to do, but you should take Milton Bradley off the bench, or you have only two batters today...

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-06 18:25:51 +0000
Thanks. I might have noticed that by 10:05pm. Milton Bradley off the bench!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-06 18:27:11 +0000
It's like I like getting my ass handed to me. No! Wait! I forgot! Chairs! 9-5!

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-04-06 18:29:37 +0000

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-06 20:06:14 +0000
Crud! Lowry leaves after 1.2 innings with a back injury... do I have to shop for another starter?

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-06 21:30:37 +0000
Jimmy Rollins goes hitless.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-07 12:22:01 +0000
The Chairs make it interesting, bring the week to 7-6. I wasn't helped that the only three Tasters players to appear yesterday combined for 0/11.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-07 12:44:31 +0000
Troy Glaus scored a run, though. I looked at the play by play and it says that Glaus singled in the bottom of the 4th... no error, no fielder's choice. I don't know what that's about.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-07 13:03:56 +0000
I want my hit! Passed ball or wild pitch? Maybe the official scoring got changed after Yahoo! created the play by play. This box score doesn't mention the hit.

Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-04-07 15:17:26 +0000
It's a good name for a team G lib - you shall join us or die!

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-08 12:19:56 +0000
It's getting close at 7-6. I've got three starting pitchers going today, and I'm still condfident the Tasters will sweep the R,H,RBI categories. Not to mention OBP and SLG. Tasters down by 5 in the RBI category, but can Andruw Jones really have anymore in him this week? He's already batted in 9. Yesterday saw Milton Bradley with a stolen base, Troy Glaus hit another home run, and Jimmy Rollins went 3/4. John Damon starts the season on a tear, he's hitting .389 Chairs are disappointed to lose Noah Lowry to the DL. Maybe a trade? Wagner for Zambrano?

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-08 15:05:12 +0000
Throw Lowry on the DL and pick up a mid-level guy 'til he comes back- someone like Maddux who wins and is still a free agent.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-08 16:08:36 +0000
Maddux is on Steveo's (Gadi's housemate) team. I put Lowry on the DL and picked up Radke. I also dropped Hillenbrand and picked up Youkilis, just for fun.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-08 16:10:06 +0000
I also decided that Luis Gonzalez is having a great start and would do more for my team than Randy Winn, so I've swapped who my bench OF is.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-08 18:21:00 +0000
I've dropped the other Luis Gonzalez. Carpenter and Zambrano are both looking good through 5.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-09 13:47:59 +0000
The Taster's bats go quiet yesterday and the Chairs pull into the lead, 7-6. Tied in runs, one behind in hits, even though we lead in OBP by 70 points and SLG by 130! Inconceivable!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-09 14:02:32 +0000
The Chairs have steadily gained all week. Watch for us to win that run battle... I'm thinking we'll eek you out in either HR or SV, whilst holding all other leads. Chairs! 9-5!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-09 14:04:07 +0000
Note: still no appearances from my #1 pick, Mariano "Sure Thing" Rivera.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-09 14:23:43 +0000
To win the SV category (against a team with 3 times as many relivers) and lose the week would be bittersweet.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-09 14:33:15 +0000
I'm very disappointed in my team's saves. Wagner blew one. Benitez to the DL. "Sure Thing" with nothing. The stars of my relief corps this week have been my setup guys, Shields and Howry with 3 appearances and a win apiece.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-09 14:46:41 +0000
What a surprise.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-09 22:45:07 +0000
"Sure Thing" is the only reason you won in APP this week... his appearance today. I think we tied in stolen bases, Tasters picked up two. Chairs take W and SV. Tasters with IP and K. So we're at Chairs 3, Tasters 2 so far. There is no way I can figure out the SLG, OBP, ERA, and WHIP. Let's say they stay the same, 5-4. Tasters scored 5 times today, Chairs 4, so that's Tasters 5, Chairs 5. Chairs will take RBIs, that's Chairs 6, Tasters 5. Tasters will take HR, that's 6-6. All my hopes ride on Juan Pierre right now; two hits will give me the H category and the week. Unless Bob Howry comes in for St. Louis and messes with everything.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-09 22:45:09 +0000
All trash talk aside, I think we're going to tie 7-7. All categories stay as they were today, except the Tasters pull ahead by 1 in runs. Had I known Youk would be riding the plank today, I would have had my backup infielder in, and scored one more run to keep that tied. Crud.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-04-09 23:41:16 +0000
Yo TGL, any chance you could put *all* of the divisions up on the left? Fantasy league, you know....

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-09 23:52:21 +0000
Youk without stats is tough. Juan Pierre is 0/2, it's now the No. 2 hitter up in the fourth.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-10 01:37:38 +0000
I didn't see those stolen bases... I think the Tasters win 8-6.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-10 03:11:43 +0000
Pierre goes 0/5. I think I needed one hit to tie in that category. I think the Tasters drop to 0-1 after Week One. When do they update the matchups?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-10 09:24:14 +0000
Tasters win 7-6-1... I'm glad we keep our wins though, so the hairs are right behind them with 6-7-1. Best matchup in the league.

Posted by tgl on 2006-04-10 12:51:11 +0000
Another thing I didn't know... the league standings are a summary of your weeks results in each category. Good matchup. I thought I needed the H category to even tie. A pleasant surprise. Strikers or Sliders is Cables?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-10 13:20:20 +0000
Stikers can pull on a rope and kill a cow... as bad as any other fucker can!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-04-10 13:20:58 +0000
You snuck up on me on the steals. I should'a tied you in the hits! Damn!
