It's Mine...It's All Mine!

So, as of 3-ish pm on Friday, I became a home owner! I've started pulling up the carpet, but need someone to finish the job and make the floors nice again...shouldn't take too much work, but I don't know how to do it or have the equipment necessary. Yesterday I cleaned and met with a contractor I met at the paint store on Friday morning. He's a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn whose dad is an Orthodox rabbi and his mom teaches Hebrew at a NYC college; he's running away from being Jewish and being a New Yorker. I'm pretty sure he asked me on a date, but when he came by the house for the second time yesterday, he reeked of pot smoke, and I just can't see myself dating a burner here. Anyway, today I spent 3+ hours removing layers of contact paper from my kitchen shelves. I still have two more shelves to go, but I ran out of steam...and need my step-stool. Several times I almost fell off the counter. Tomorrow I'm hoping to move most of my boxes into the garage to save time later. I also have a neighbor's son who's going to give me an estimate on cleaning my gutters later this week, and a couple of other kids on the block who a cutting my grass. They stopped half-way through on Friday and didn't finish today since it was pouring all day. I may have gotten hosed on this one. Live and learn. Hopefully I'll order appliances this week since my bro gets back from Israel first thing in the morning; he has a great hook-up for me.

"...a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn whose dad is an Orthodox rabbi and his mom teaches Hebrew at a NYC college; he's running away from being Jewish and being a New Yorker..." Yep, sounds like a burner. I'll bet he packs a bowl of keef right after he has a bowl of Cheerios.

Keef = it's what's for breakfast. Congrats on the house, Miriam.

Thank you! As the stoner contractor put it: "You've totally got the party garage!"

Boo-ya!

Thank you! Thank you! Now you just have to save up enough to come visit! Tonight I hope to put on the toilet seat I bought at Lowe's yesterday afternoon. I'd wandered around there for about 2+ hours and never found the peg hooks I wanted for the garage pegboard. Thinking of spraypainting it gold. Thoughts?

Maybe it could replace the toilet that's currently in the laundry room shower stall. By the way, both are inoperable at the moment. So is the sink on the other side of the wall. Those will have to wait to be repaired until after I do the electrical, painting and flooring work...in the next two weeks!

Okay, the tally is looking like this: 1) skimming drywall (so my paint job is smooth) on walls and ceiling on Saturday-$250 2) electrical-$700 3) floors-$500 4) clean gutters-$40 5) mow lawn-$25 6) light fixtures for garage-$50-100 7) ceiling fan and light for living room-$50-100 8)paint and supplies-$?150-300 Knowing I can move into my house by May 15...somewhat costly.

Okay, the neighbor kid is trying to price-gouge me. I think I'm going to hire my sister's gutter cleaner. Looks like I'm going to spend Wednesday night at the new place! Movers are coming to get the free appliances and rest of my furniture...and the cable is getting transferred! I'm still struggling with whether or not to take the gas range and pay for a gas line to be installed or to get a nice electric range. Such a dilemma!

You should be able to get a gas line installed for free. The gas company wants to sell you gas; you can't buy it until they give you the connection. It helps if you have other gas appliances (maybe convert the water heater?).

Yeah, I looked into it and they'll only do it for free if I have a gas water heater or heat pump. For a range they'll do it for $1700. The question is, do I buy a decent electric range for $500-1000? or do I get the gas line for a little more and enjoy the cooking process again?

Nothing like watching the laundry while you are on the john.

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-08 21:19:00 +0000
I bet you a gas water heater is way less than $1700. . . . If you can get it installed for less than $1400, you'd be ahead Sears sells a 30gal. for $300. You may want a tankless as they are more efficient. (Which is what I tell myself 'cuz that's what we got). ...and you get a gas range for free (well, plus installation costs).

Tankless, it's very european.

The question comes down to savings down the line. Right now gas is very expensive here. Electric is much lower, and I'm hoping to suppliment with solar once I figure out how to do that. I have a friend in town who said he will find me another cheap or free gas range when I want one...
