TenDiamonds in hospice

So 10D got the helicopter ride from Sherborn to the BU Medical Center yesterday. It turns out that when a Jeep Cheroke rear-ends you at 30 mph while you're atop a BMW motorcycle you get the helicopter ride. The Man is OK and in decent spirits considering... although, the narcotics have him puking a bit: I guess 10D just spent last night there, and he might be on his way home in a couple of hours.

Motorcycle safety = oxymoron.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-05-09 19:22:38 +0000
I sincerely hope 10 D is OK. Also: I'm really hoping he's not in Hospice care: that's for in-home end stage terminal patients...

Holy crap! Will the doctors be able to reattach the beard?

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-10 00:15:13 +0000
What about Tendy?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-05-10 01:32:55 +0000
Yes. It is. My mother's in hospice care now. Rich, I hope you don't know about hospice through personal experience. Thanks for your concise definition - very tastefully said. And I do hope that 10D's ok.

Outlook is grim, though they may bring in a specialist from Akron.

Get well soon, Jason. And grow the beard back.

I got checked out of the hospital yesterday, and am spending the rest of the week at home. Thanks for all of your warm thoughts. All things considered, I'm in really great shape. I have a couple of cracked vertabrae, a couple of scrapes on my legs, many bruises all over my body and a bunch of pulled muscles. BH, You're full of shit. Motorcycle safety is very real and valid. There's little we can do about getting rear ended in traffic by stupid little girls in their parents cars. I would be in a lot worse shape had I not been wearing proper gear, and the scrapes on my legs are due to the fact that my Carhartts are _not_ proper riding gear, and I will be getting better pants before I start riding again. Indeed I was not in hospice. My mother was once in hospice as well, I'm sorry to hear about yer mum, Pamsterdam. The shave is a coincidence, I did that on Sunday. Samantha is in pretty bad shape, I gather. I haven't seen her, but she was happily purring on the side of the road as I waited for the ambulance and I had to ask one of the useless onlookers to go switch her off. I have a feeling that mechanically she's fine, but all of the plastic doo-dads, that are the difference betwixt a chopper and a motorcycle are gone. Uh, that's all I can think of right now.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-05-10 09:22:29 +0000
Wow. Glad to hear you're doing fine. Sorry about Samantha. You might have to start calling her "Sam" (the abridged version). Do I understand correctly that your mother was in hospice and then somehow pulled through? I'd love to hear about it, if that's the case. I guess doctors don't know everything, right? PS - Give in and buy leather riding gear. I'm serious. You'll look totally gay but you'll save your legs some damage if there's a next time.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-05-10 09:33:39 +0000
Samantha has been Sam for some time... now maybe just S? I'm sorry to say that my mother was in hospice and did not pull through. Doctors do not know everything. I wear proper riding gear, with the exception of the aforementioned pants, which I intend to rectify. As a student in the art of motorcycle safety, I wouldn't be caught dead (literally) in leathers. They are crap. The synthetics you can get now, made of kevlar and gore tex and all sorts of other fancy stuff are lighter, more comfortable and _much_ better protection. Leather riding gear is a fashion statement.

Fuck, D, I'm really sorry. Cracked vertebrae are no joke. And I'm sorry to hear about your mum, Pamsterdam.

Posted by cdubrocker on 2006-05-10 09:40:17 +0000
Hope you have a smooth recovery, 10D.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-05-10 09:44:25 +0000
I'm sorry, 10D - I didn't know about your mother. It's easy to think you're the only one having to deal with this stuff so (relatively) young, isn't it? Thanks for the solidarity - I truly appreciate it. I didn't realise about leathers being a fashion statement - that's useful ammunition. I shall delightedly bring this up with my friend who refuses to ride any non-Japanese motorcycles and mocks me for fancying German design. When's your birthday? It would be kinda cool if Rideside pitched in to have custom-made full-body fancy riding gear with tacky slogans all over... Heh heh heh. I hope you're not in pain. Did they hook you up?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-05-10 09:46:14 +0000
Thanks, G. She's got the emotional strength of a Buddhist monk, I kid you not. Every day I'm reminded of why I grew up completely in awe of her.

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-10 10:13:43 +0000
I'm definitely not shaving my beard now.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-10 12:19:40 +0000
All I'm sayin' is that everyone I know with a motorcycle has gotten fucked up in an accident.

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-10 12:28:22 +0000
Not me.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-10 12:31:10 +0000
Knock on wood.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-05-10 12:45:03 +0000
I don't mean to pull a Dawn here, but that was, and continues to be a fucked up and dick comment. Thanks for your support, asshole.

No doubt whatsoever that there are excellent safety precautions that Motorcyclists can use. Speaking specificly on a statistic basis: With over 7+ years in the rehabilitative services experience as an Occupational Therapist, there is a really high # of younger (people under the age of 40)patients my wife has seen and worked with that have been in MVA (Motor Vehicle Accidents). In the MVA category, more of these are motorcycle accidents than any other motor vehicle. I think the Buzz was just saying, as with everything else in life, that motorcycling is associated with risks - maybe more risks in motorcycling than in other life activities.

sorry for your injuries - you definitely have my support - not much else I can say.

We love you, man. Take care.

The Sherborn Police Department has a couple of photos on their web page... enjoy!

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-05-11 10:25:43 +0000
I like that they've written "Operator of the Jeep was following too close". Lots of finger-wagging in their direction!

Posted by Miriam on 2006-05-11 11:21:29 +0000
Holy Shit! I hope you're on the good drugs and that your bones and bruises heal quickly and well.

David Kronenberg Crash Don Cheadle Crash Jason Breslau Crash --- My favorite caption: "Inattentive operator removing her shoes while driving" --- Is that youR Carhartts and jacket laying on the road? Did you get cut out of them?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-05-11 12:45:06 +0000
Yes, those are my clothes. Yes, I was cut out of them.

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-11 12:59:29 +0000
What's better than helicopter rides? . . . Naked helicopter rides.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-05-11 13:05:25 +0000
I had my undies on... they didn't cut them off until later.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-11 13:05:42 +0000
What's better than naked helicopter rides? . . . Nothin'.

10D, How you feelin'? Still bruised and battered? Back to work? Can you chase your bundle of joy around the new place?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-05-17 17:33:22 +0000
I'm feelin OK. I'm rather bruised, and have limited range of motion, but I'm able to be up and about, and I've been coming to work this week. Virtually all care and maintenance of the BOJ is handled by the wife, although, once she puts him in the high chair, I can shove food in his face.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-17 17:40:02 +0000
Took me a minute to realize that 'BOJ' stood for 'bundle of joy.'

Posted by MF DU on 2006-05-17 17:49:13 +0000
take it from ladewtang: there is nothing quite as joyful as attempting to get food into the mouth of a "busy" infant...

Posted by Miriam on 2006-05-17 20:25:07 +0000
Hope you keep healing quickly and well.

Posted by MrChuckles on 2006-05-21 14:34:29 +0000
10D - Get better soon.

The rare 'MrChuckles' post

Posted by MrChuckles on 2006-06-14 00:12:57 +0000
Mr. Chuckles has been in hiding. How's the patient doing these days?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-06-14 12:10:38 +0000
Thanks for asking, MrC. I'm OK, I went to the neurosurgeon on Monday and I'm healing very well. My vertebrae are all bound back together so I don't need the back brace anymore and I'm allowed to pick up my son. I'm going to my doctor to (hopefully) get started on physical therapy on Friday.

Posted by Miriam on 2006-06-14 12:39:39 +0000
Congrats! Stick with the therapy and you'll be better in no time.
