This one's for Terry G.

And all other prog-math-geek-rockers. Review of World Class Listening Problem, the new Don Caballero disc.

I've finally read the review. I'll stick with Don Caballero 2, thanks.

wow - and to think I was just just just about to ask for a Don Cab recommendation...

Putting a lot of T+G on the 'device' (tm) tonite:
Slint - Spiderland
Jesus Lizard - Liar
Rapeman - Two Nuns
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Butthole Surfers - Hairway to Steven
Shellac - At Action Park

fun fun fun...

There are two types of people in this world: Dischord listeners and Touch + Go listeners. I am the later.

Amphetamine Reptile listeners aren't quite "people". (Although, I have a soft spot for COWS and Helios Creed).

What if you are all three?

anymore disparaging Tom Hazelmeyer comments and ummm empty threat- this isnt my board (backs down in shame...)

Lorbering:

SST : Dischord :: AmRep : T+G

Posted by MF DU on 2006-05-24 03:51:12 +0000
Minor Threat
Hoover
Nation Of Ulysses
Fugazi
Q and Not U
Lungfish
Jawbox
Warmers

you're asking me to choose? DAMN YOU!

Posted by MF DU on 2006-05-24 03:53:49 +0000
(clears throat loudly)

any Don Cab recommendations?

Posted by MF DU on 2006-05-24 04:08:03 +0000
OK I've moved on to to Melvins 'Houdini' (Atlantic) Goodbye indies...

Is there anything that 'Houdini' can't do? Jesus - the Melvins terrify me (in a good way)

You must favor one label over the other. For instance: You've just named five or six fantastic bands that recorded on the T+G label. --Was Slint on T+G or just Dutch East India distributed by T+G?--

I'd be hard pressed to list five or six Dischord bands that _I'd_ want on an eponymously named digital media playback device. There are still a bunch of T+G bands I'd consider: Scratch Acid, Killdozer, Laughing Hyenas.

Dischord: Fugazi, Minor Threat, Slant 6, one of those J. Robbins bands and ...

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-24 03:54:59 +0000
NoU, of course.

Supposedly I'd be into Q and Not U, haven't checked it out yet. Wait! I can steal it!

Posted by tgl on 2006-05-24 03:59:33 +0000
The essential recordings:

For Respect -- to understand that they are a Fugazi tribute band at heart
Singles Breaking Up -- a collection, albeit, but the transformation begins
Don Cab 2 -- the masterpiece?

If I was a bear, I'd say that's three.

Its fun for board discussion, but I honestly dont prefer one over the other

More greats:
Dischord:
Makeup (the first live disc)
Embrace
Shudder To Think
Evens
Rites Of Spring

Touch and Go:
June of 44 (Quarterstick)
Tv On the Radio

Good call on Killdozer - ever hear their renditions of EMF's 'Unbelievable' or Ms. Wardrobe Malfunction's 'Nasty'?

I should clarify that all mentioned bands in this thread crammed onto said 'device' have been done so legally (really -no sarcasm)

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-05-24 05:13:28 +0000
I'm a huge "American Don" fan

Funny you mentioned the 'SST : Dischord', as on Monday night we were talking about how musically Dischord was superior than SST, but SST scored with their artwork, read Pettibon.

Bullshit -- I am both a T & G AND Dischord guy.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-24 06:00:39 +0000
Dischord:

-Minor Threat
-Fugazi
-Jawbox
-RoS
-Embrace
-N.O.U.
-LUNGFISH
-Warmers

T &G/ QS:

-Slint
-Rollins Band
-Butthole Surfers
-Rodan

Okay, maybe I am a Dischord guy.

I could have told you that.

Outstanding

(PS: Who didn't know I'm a T&G guy?)

listened to Rush on vinyl at my place on the Sunday night date...I even had his fave song, which of course I don't remember 'cause I don't remember listening to that album EVER

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-24 15:52:09 +0000
Maybe part of being a Dischord guy is being in costant denial.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go weep quietly into my emo hands.

Make sure to record (on video preferably) and post onto the world wide interweb.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-24 16:22:44 +0000
SST was good up until the point when Ginn freaked out and started putting out more records than some majors, ~'85 or so.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-05-24 16:24:26 +0000
put it on yr myspace page ...chortle

Thanks to _________., For Respect and Don Caballero 2 are now up for grabs on my playlist.

Thanks for the reccommendations, guys...

Tv on the Radio is not, by any stretch of the imagination, "great."

Ooooh, Shudder to Think! I've been reacquainting myself lately with the Pony Express Record. 'smarvelous.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-05-26 15:23:12 +0000
I taught that record in my class.

That rip-roaringly rocks! I saw them open for the Foo Fighters in DC back in the day. My memory of it is hazy, but I remember that "X-French Tee Shirt" was a really super live number. Ah, the 90s.
