'Elephant'

Gas Van Sant film about Columbine. More than anything else, it makes me want to go back and look at 'Drugstore Cowboy' again-. I liked a lot of the camera work- long single shots, a lot of the time, like when Spinal Tap is trying to find the door to the stage. Having said that, the character development was fleeting at and the insinuation that the two perps were/are gay seemed obligatory at best.

For me it towed the line between an esoteric "arty" documentary you'd see on PBS and of course the elements of style Van Sant are well known for. I had a lump in my stomach knowing what was going to happen and I think good Ol Gus did a good job of keeping the tension palpable throughout the film. the choice of unknowns helped it to be more high school like. I guess the "PBS Documentary" observation also comes from the fact that the theatrical aspect ratio was 4:3, so it was a square in the movie theaters as well as on yr TV.

BTW: Drugstore Cowboy is available in Rich's DVD Library... any good trades/exchange proposals? Lemme know. The documentary has extra (and cool) footage of the late William Seward Burroughs (whom I think was a Democrat... tsk tsk)
