Boston Massacre II

The Sox, obviously, have been just awful all weekend. Dreadful. The press has been quick to pick up on the 'Boston Massacre' tip -- the 4-game series against the Yankees at Fenway in 1978 when the Empire outscored the Sox 42-9. What no one in the press has mentioned yet is that the same '78 Sox team won something like 17 of their last 18 to force the one-game playoff. (Yeah yeah, the Bucky Dent game, whatever). How much of the skid is Varitek's absence?

Went to the sox game on Sunday with my old man. We didn't leave until One AM. As soon as the Yanks tied it up I was gone. Rain delay was ok because of the Grandstand coverage. There was a ton of energy from the crowd for papelbon in the eighth and 9th. Definetely a highlight of my red sox experiences. Willy Mo and Coco wiffed hard. gosox

Lifted directly from Seth Mnookin: How about Bobby Abreu, whom the Yankees picked up for chump change (in terms of what they had to give up)? As Gordon Edes and Nick Cafardo pointed out in yesterday’s Globe, Abreu would have cost the Sox $27.7 million for a season and a third. That’s a lot of cake. Instead, they got Eric Hinske for a little less than a season and a third at a cost of just over $4 million. Last year, Abreu had 17 win shares; Hinske had 12. And if twenty million dollars can only get you a net gain of five win shares, you’re not spending your money wisely. (A quick aside: the Sox haven’t made a decision to forego high-priced free-agents; to the contrary, they’ve decided that in order to cough up the money for truly valuable free-agents — those in their late 20’s as opposed to their late 30’s — they need to spend their money wisely.)

Varitek's absence explains about half the losses in the past three weeks. Wait, how long has he been gone?

When is the next time both teams will start catchers who do not wear batting gloves while batting? Later this year? Next year? Within the decade? It will never happen again?

Coming soon: Javier Lopez pitching to Javy Lopez.

Here we go, bottom of the order is rallying in the sixth! I expect Boston to win, as it would be in real life, the Javs always seem to do better than the Jav nots.

A 2-1 win against Weaver? The season isn't over...

You and I are the only two on the lifeboat right now. It's going to get full soon.

I hate to say it now, but even if the PinkSox had lost to Weaver tonite, I wouldn't have totally written them off (Weaver is awesome - goes 13-1 and wins the Rookie of the Year over Pappelbon?). But I was close to taking tonite as an automatic loss. I might have started thinking about how I should have seen some Independent league baseball this summer, or how cheap Bruins tickets are, or how much pot Paul Pierce smokes, or how the NCAA football's National Champion ambiguity is actually a good thing... Things I won't let go before the Sox are 9 games out: -Next is a 3 game series in Seatle (2-1 right?) -Varitek will probably play 20 of these last 35 games. -Who else in the American League has a starter and legit back up for BOTH 2nd and SS, all of which run the bases well? (Can the Sox keep Dustin on the roster?) -My Nizzle will hit 58 homers = 12 in 35 games. -Sox starting pitching, when Wakedawg comes back. -Papplebon. -The 9 game home stretch Sept 1-10 against Tor, Chi, and KC. I guess I'm on board until Sept 17th...

0-3, natch That lifeboat is still pretty, roomy, eh? I'm looking forward to going to a non-sellout Red Sox game next year.
