When you're responding to a specific post, there's a little "reply" link at the bottom of a specific post. That will insert the comment in the thread where it belongs. Use it.

I think you should force threaded. We have a lot of conversations that fork into separate discussions, and threaded allows for that, whereas one person contributing in flat mode will make a mess of that.
Of course, it's very fascist to force it. I prefer to ridicule people into assimilation.
