Sept 10th - Harvard Square
Interesting day yesterday in Harvard Square with Mohammed Khatami speaking at the Kennedy school, and roughly 300 protestors from many sects with signs like "Hold Governments Accountable" and "Pray for peace" or "Terrorists love liberals", "Sept 11th - Harvard forgets" and even a "Impeach them both!" poster.
Some people wrapped in Iranian flags, some in Israeli flags, and two or three in white contamination suits with biohazard symbols. Dozens of Feds in suits talking into their sleeves, and dozens of Cambridge cops in "lite" riot gear including a cop on a BMW motorcycle with SIDECAR! Needless to say, I gave the Cambridge bike cops some chowder and diet cokes on the house.
Afterwards, I talked to several people who saw Khatami's speech. Appearantly Khatami was introduced by a university dean with a quote from our President, about how Bush wanted him to visit (afterall, it was pointed out to me, Bush gave Khatami the visa and Federal protection upwards of 30 guards) and that America needs to learn more about Iran, which really pleased me. But if Bush keeps on comparing Iran to Nazi Germany, I'm not sure how serious he is. Anyhow, I understand Khatami repeated his disdain for bin Laden, and his use of Islam in violence.
Interesting day to be sure.
