I'll take "gouging my own eyes out with a spoon" for 500.

So in 5th grade, my sister and I loved this song on the radio that we thought at the time was called "Hit the Big Square"

alas, (It's Hip to Be) Square

I'll have you know that I was exclusively into Duran Duran and Phil Collins in 1984.

In that order.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-10-03 19:05:03 +0000
whatever. any self respecting member of either the BMG or Columbia tape / album club totally had 'Sports', even ifyou claimed to have liked 'cooler' acts.

actually, it was probably still called the RCA club and not BMG back then, but I digress...

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-10-03 19:11:31 +0000
I was 11 in 1984, and you - my dear - were 10. Surely too young to belong to a music club, no?

And I didn't get into white American music until 1995.

Unless you count Neil Diamond. But he's a Canuck, so I guess not.

PLUS I resent your implication that my love of Phil Collins was somehow "cool". I was deeply, deeply uncool. I wore matching sweater-cords outfits every freaking day, man.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-03 19:19:02 +0000
More importantly, he's semetic.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-10-03 19:23:10 +0000
You gotta love a Canadian Jew who sings about both Christmas and America.

Plus, there's the chest hair to consider.

Yow.

parental cosigns.... duh!

Lucky!

My luck was hindered by extremely bad taste.

In other words, having no records at all is better than having Beverly Hills Cop II soundtracks...

I was in the 6th row at Great Woods for a Styx concert in High School...

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band are sick. "Those Hollywood nights!"

Posted by tommy on 2006-10-03 22:48:30 +0000
Plus, he hung out with Handsome Dick at least once..

But, I voted for Huey because he showed his dink in "Short Cuts"

Purchased "Sports" _and_ "Fore!" the same day at Bradlee's on Fort Eddy Rd, Concord NH. Circa 1986.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-04 07:53:11 +0000
I didn't have any Huey records -- too busy listening to Duran Duran.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-04 07:53:46 +0000
Lorbering: forgot to mention that I have seen Huey Lewis' guitarist's sister with no clothes on.

studmuffin!

You said "dink"!

re: "too busy listening to Duran Duran"

I know you like to think that yr shit dont stink, but lean a little closer, and im sure you'll find roses really smell like poo poo.

Dude, in New Hampshire in 1984, it was totally dorky to be a guy listening to Duran Duran. D2 was girls' terrain.

I got yr back, buzzorhowl.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-10-04 16:16:18 +0000
Yes but it doesnt matter whether it was cool or not in 1984.

Regardless of whats in your pants, Saying that you Listened to a large amount of Duran Duran in 1984 in 2006 is "cool".

If I can be a bastard for a moment, almost too cool.

There was no other popular music at that time that you guys listened to that has a more disrespected legacy?

If not - my hats off to you for having impeccable taste then and now. If so - why not fess it?

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-04 16:22:26 +0000
Duran Duran was my favorite band starting in like second grade. I had a few J. Geils records, and Culture Club.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-10-04 16:24:13 +0000
MFDU, have I not already confessed to my long-term adoration for Phil Collins? Phil Collins. And Neil Diamond. You want a full list of who I was really into in 1984?

Duran Duran
Phil Collins
Neil Diamond
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Culture Club
Billy Ocean

If being a massive dork in 1984 makes me cool in your eyes, hell, that's AOK by me. I always wanted your admiration, MFDU. For realio. Bucko.

1984 - I was all about Men At Work. Conor and I were in a "band" called Kids Unemployed which was a direct parody thereof. Kids Incorporated came on TV later that year, they totally ripped us off.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-04 16:27:08 +0000
Neil Diamond was cool way before 1984. He was cool in 1984. He is cool now. Listening to him at any time has been cool. A key way to spot uncool people is to look for people who don't know this. A lot of them sing "bum bum bum" during Sweet Caroline.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-10-04 16:34:18 +0000
You're right - my apologies for being obtuse on Collins.

'Sussido' is not in the same ballpark as 'Girls On the Film'.

In 1984, I felt like Duran Duran being my favorite band was a curse -- kids were always calling me a fag.

Hey, DU, what were you saying about glass houses?

awesome.

You may be wrong, but for all I know, you may be right.

I remember in 84 it was a choice of Michael Jackson or Duran Duran. If you were a slut you listened to Prince. Peter Gabriel was hot too with "Monkey" But hats off to Pamsterdam for actually purchasing a Billy Ocean album. THe Duran Duran videos were also softcore porn "The Chaeuffur" had a dance scene in a parking lot with chicks in lingerie, and that was also a great song!

Of course, MJ. I totally spaced on 1984 being the year of The Gloved One. I used to kiss his poster every night.

</src>

Prince was way too sexy for me, but I still wanted to touch his hairy chest.

Madonna was too sexy for me. But I totally wanted to be the floor at the MTV music awards when she did her crazy dance!

Kids Unemployed!!!
K.U.!!!
We had a symbol, songs, and a line-up (10D, Walrod, Taylor Dowdy, Paul Dormer, and me), but I'm not sure we ever practiced.

1984 for me:
Men at Work
Eurythmics
Led Zep
Beatles
Eddie Grant
Talking Heads
U2
REM

... and yes I had an older sister who was into music.
