2006 MLB Playoffs apreesh

Holy shit, it's been awesome so far: -Jeter went 5-5 last night. My favorite Yankee. -Paul Lo Duca was involved in a 9-4-2-2 double play today, tagging out Jeff Kent and JD Drew in succession. -New Hampshire's own Chris Carpenter got the win for the Cardinals. -Mark Kotsay hit an inside-the-park home run...the second such playoff instance involving Gold Glove outfielder Torii Hunter. Not giving up on the Twins yet -- the A's have lost the last nine potential clinching games.

Still can't root for the MFY, and not for the usual reasons; I actually like Day-twah. Dodgers are my 2nd favorite team, but the AL wins the WS in 5 games.

_AND_ the NHL season started today. The Appreesh just doesn't end. I'd like to see Detroit and the Dodgers square off, I reckon.

Anyone know why they pulled Simmons MLB playoff outlook? It was there like 2 hours ago.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-05 03:57:58 +0000
Here's game four. If I had my druthers, I, too, would go with DET-LAD. The least satisfying Series I can think of would be another of the Subway variety.

This bit is a laugh: "Aftah the game we'll hop on ah bikes and cruise the Daniel Webstah Highway!"

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-05 04:38:01 +0000
Simmons: "2:40 -- Nice job by ESPN running the famous 1985 play where Carlton Fisk tagged out two Yankees (Bobby Meacham and Dale Berra) on the same play. Although that play wasn't nearly as impressive as today's play because Berra was probably coked out of his mind at the time."

he kind of looks like Morgan Spurlock:

ARod just struck out with the bases loaded in the first. Holla!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-05 17:35:29 +0000
Whoop!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-05 17:36:29 +0000
Day-Twat on the board!

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-05 18:22:00 +0000
Damon, upper deck. 3-1 MFY.

Game Over! Yanks can't do it.

Wells pitching for the Padres today.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-05 20:39:33 +0000
Dave Roberts and Josh Bard just got Encarnacion out at home. Sheesh!

One more to go for the Tigers!

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-07 07:54:01 +0000
MFY go down?!?! Small market WS?!?

Posted by tgl on 2006-10-09 23:26:05 +0000
Very satisfying to hear the YES announcers lament the end of the season as the Tigers prevailed over the MFY on Saturday night. Even more satisfying to overhear a New Yorker at a tony cafe in Saugerties, NY explain why she wants the Detroit to win the WS as that will mean the MFY will have lost to the eventual champions. It should be noted that YES announcers are always complimentary to the opposing team, even if the Yanks are on the losing end. The final call of the game "Tigers win!" was fairly spirited.

Game on. Will Rogers spin us another gem?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-13 20:00:53 +0000
Already looking like not.

Posted by tgl on 2006-10-13 20:28:49 +0000
One hit is better than two runs on two hits. Isn't it?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-13 20:30:11 +0000
A shutout is one thing... Two baserunners in the first innings may be a part of a shutout, but it does not lead us to believe that we will see a gem.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-13 23:20:38 +0000
Rogers w/ the gem. Detroit record for fewest hits in a postseason game: 2.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-14 01:02:49 +0000
Outstanding. The Mets game is sloppy.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-15 17:44:27 +0000
How much of an advantage does Detroit have with all the time they get off before the NL is decided? If the Mets had their pitching intact, this could have been a sweep... Now I predict Mets in 7. Why can't we get guys like Suppan?

Posted by tgl on 2006-10-16 12:59:37 +0000
Tigers in 5.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-16 13:05:33 +0000
I was thinking the same this morning.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-17 15:00:57 +0000
I thought the same last night

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-20 09:54:16 +0000
I changed my mind. Tigers in 5 was under the mistaken impression that the Metropolitans would advance... Tigers in 4.

Posted by tgl on 2006-10-20 12:34:41 +0000
Can I get quick highlights of the '68 series? Why do I care that we have a re-match? I'm going to guess that this link will have all I need.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-20 15:38:36 +0000
'68 was the Year Of The Pitcher, one of the reasons why the DH was introduced years later -- Yaz won the batting title in the AL by hitting .301. The height of the mound was changed thereafter, too. McLain won 31 that year, and Earl Wilson, a Sox castoff, also did well for the Tigers. Bob Gibson, though, was unstoppable that year (again)-- his ERA was 1.12. (I just got done reading about Earl Wilson in Shut Out, which is amazing and embarrasing.)

Everyone's seen it and heard the hype, but Endy Chavez made one of the great catches in playoff history.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-21 03:39:49 +0000
Completely insane.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-21 03:52:22 +0000
Joe Buck makes a decent call there as well.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-21 05:53:05 +0000
I think Buck is okay.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-10-21 15:58:58 +0000
Indeed, that was one of the best catches I've ever seen. And turning the double play was outstanding, too. My comments on the play, and to take nothing away from Chavez:
  1. This was hit on the first pitch after an extended coaching visit to the mound in which Buck et al thought Perez was done. When they left him there, they commented that this would definitely be the last batter he faced, as Bradford was up and ready.
  2. This was a major baserunning gaffe. A ball that high in that park was either going to be caught or over the fence. There was no reason to be halfway to third on that.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-23 01:51:11 +0000
Kenny Rogers just gave up his SECOND hit -- top of the eighth. Wow.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-23 02:11:55 +0000
Is Jones gonna blow it?

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-23 02:12:55 +0000
Phew!

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-23 04:20:55 +0000
... and Molina gets the Cards 2nd hit roughly 15 seconds after FOX displays all four of the "One hit games in the Playoffs" statistic. Simmons will say something in his next cloumn about that jinx. Man, that was brutal.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-23 06:16:28 +0000
Speaking of Simmons, his new Milton Berle analogy is pretty great.

Chris Carpenter makes me proud to be from New Hampshire. Jesus, what if the Cardinals win?

Posted by MF DU on 2006-10-25 15:22:46 +0000
they just might. Why haven't we started a 2006 world Series thread? this aint the playoffs no mo.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-10-27 15:08:44 +0000
Um, the Cardinals are up 3 to 1.
