The Phantom Pizza Gourmet

Has anyone seen Yelp.com yet. It is a restaurant and club review place. Pretty cool. Anyway I am on the search for the best pizza ever. I have reviewed the following recently. Upper Crust Charles St. Mama Gina's Union Sq Panifico Charles St. Santarpio's Eastie Newbury Pizza Copley I liked Santarpio's Pizza the best and Panifico's restaurant environment was a bit of alright. Let me know of more hidden gems to "review"

C'mon up to Lynn, we got Monte's. Not particularly good, but interesting. You'll need to have an Aram's I versus Aram's II (no longer affiliated with Aram's I) duel.

Yuppie GLib likes Cambridge 1 in Harvard Square. Also, it might not exactly fall into the category of 'pizza', but Veggie Planet's pies are pretty awesome.

I went to Woody's Pizza today and was not impressed. They have a wood stove. Right near Berkelee. Decent pie but not outstanding. They do have Brooklyn Lager on tap though.

I know it's not "cool," but lately I've been craving Bertucci's. Solid pie every time.

Camb. #1 = thumbs up. Grilled pizza is where it's at.

The pie itself is nothing special, but Dial-A-Pizza is notable because they have "free delivery", but also manage to have a discount if you pick it up yourself.

Cambridge 1 is very good. For delivery, it's Big Daddy's in Allston, every time.

The only halfway decent pizza that I have found in Ho-Town is Bertucci's... It's fine. Unfortunately, the teen-aged kids that run the take out counter are all covered with bees.

"It's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done." --Gibby Haynes After about a month at 376 Prospect St .... number 3, I received a call for Dial-a-Pizza by a woman with a comely voice. I regret that I did not take the order, pickup the pie, and make a delivery.

The Globe ran an article a few months ago in City Weekly (can't find it on The Interweb) about the strange stories of pizza delivery folks. Apparently, many women will "tip" by flashing. Who knew? Oh, and by the way, if you see your mom this weekend...

Cambridge One probably has the best thin crust. I think deep dish is a thing of the past but I'm pretty sure it was Papa GIno's who worked that into it's marketing scheme. I used to enjoy the buffet style at Pizza Hut. They even had desert pizzas.

Actually, for a pretty good pie in Brigham Circle the place to go is Penguin Pizza. If you order a slice, sometimes it's a little old and/or cold (although it's 1/4 pie, and really cheap), but a whole pie wis a piping hot, thin crust delectable treat. They have lots of weird toppings that are actually really good, and it has a funky, independent feel. They also have some good beers on tap, I think Endurance Pale Ale is one, and a top-notch bottled beer selection. Mmmmm... I think I'm going there for lunch. However, Santarpio's is still the best.

I really dig my slice of mushroom pizza from Hi-Fi.

I wouldn't be fair in claiming that Emma's pizza is far superior to Cambridge 1, as I've never been to the later, however I will: Emma's is the best thin-crust pizza. I prefer floppy, NY style, however.

Santarpio's is SO overrated, no should go there, who wants to drive through a tunnel, the waiters can be rude and they only have Frank Sinatra and Al Martino on the jukebox.

Posted by tgl on 2006-10-27 13:32:55 +0000
Agreed. Stay in Harvard Sq., for Pete's sake!

Posted by mr. mister on 2006-10-27 13:35:13 +0000
Santarpio's did make me wait 20 minutes for a pizza. We ordered peppers and onions or some vegetarian fare and got pepperoni. At which point we reordered and waited another 20 minutes. The pizza nazi "as the waitress referred to the cook" was not happy at the waste of a good pie. It was still wicked good. THey know how to make the sauce.

I'm going to throw out Little Steve's House of Pizza on Boylston. Awesome in it's awfulness. Giant slice of pizza for $2, and a can of Bud for $2.50... prices have probably gone up.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-27 15:26:15 +0000
This summer: Pizza $2.25. Bud still $2.50

After Eric Page and I bicycled through south England in '94, we stumbled upon a "buffet style" Pizza Hut in olde Folkstone (just west of Dover). For 10 quid we ate the equivalent of 3 pies. Needless to say, 35 days later we returned to said Pizza Hut after cycling thru France, and visiting Italy, Switzerland, Holland, and Belgium. The waitress recognized us though we were skinnier, dirtier and poorer. "Hello again, boys," and then she turned to the kitchen and yelled, "Put a few more pizzas in the oven!"

An all 'Chairman of the Board' diet doesn't sound like such a bad thing to me. It's Franks' world. We Just Live In It. some of the other points you mention sound discouraging, but the comments on the sauce couplied w/ Frank would still make me want to try the place at least once...

I dock some points from Little Steve for his awful chicken parm subs.

I dock points from tommy for going to Little Steve and ordering a chicken parm sub.

My sister once got a counter dude fired from little steve's. Also, I like the slices at that joint on tremont next to the crummy bar across from emerson majestic.

Posted by G lib on 2006-10-29 23:15:33 +0000
I don't know the name of that pizza place, but the crummy bar is called "The Tam." You can bring the pizza into the bar, too-- they don't mind. Honestly, though, every time I've been there, I've been half in the bag, which is undoubtably the time when pizza tastes best.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2006-10-30 00:13:05 +0000
"New York Pizza and Subs" When I worked at 177 Tremont Street I regularly went there on Mondays, and being stone cold sober I found the pizza to be average, but the chicken kabob and steak n' cheese subs are outstanding. They also do a decent veggie stir-fry sub.

Little Stevie's was closed for a while due to health violations. The sign was something like "closed weeks 2 for no more pizza". I like the way they chain their red pepper flakes and parmesan cheese to the table.

That is an awesome story.

3 Aces between Harvard Sq and Porter is pretty good, too. I like the atmosphere there. Can't stand Cambridge 1...always tasted burnt to me.

when i was younger and fatter my friends and i used to not eat for an entire night shift in the sausage factory (and yes im a veggy now) and then go to the lunchtime buffet at pizza hut (nearest pizza hut to my house was 60 miles away though) - the object would be to eat as many slices as possible - my record is 12, my brothers 14 and my friend Raoul a wopping 15 slices however pizza hut have an evil stoner removal technique - when they see you have no plans of stopping after 4 or 5 pizza's they start bringing out nothing but sardine and tuna and old socks flavoured pizzas - our demands for 3 more vegetarian hots fell on deaf ears... bastards there is a pizza delivery company in west london called WOP - wood oven pizza - obviously run by turks not wops - good pizza though
