I was Wikipediaing around a bit about billiards, (in honor of my freshly installed pool table in my basement, come over for a game) and found an interesting chain of facts.
- The word carom comes from billiards, although it is used outside of the game, notably in describing wreckless driving.
- Carom is a bit of a misspelling from the name of the red ball in non-pocket billiards, which is called the carambole.
- The red ball is named the carambole after a red fruit called the carambola.
- We are more familiar with a different subspecies of the carombola, the star fruit.
I'm fascinated.
Also, I can't say Wikipedia anymore without singing it they way Weird Al does in White and Nerdy... I may have a problem.
