The Immersion, part I : David Bowie

Me and BQ3000 and Honar were looking at Bowie videos the other night. I don't really know the guy's catalogue that well (even after watching all 47 of those fuckig things). So here's the plan: Starting in January, I'm going to post one Bowie album a week, in chronological order, until I/we get all the way through his discography. If everything goes well, we can do another artist (Dylan? Springsteen? Neil Young?) afterwards. Thoughts?

I doesn't matter what you wear, Just as long as you don't care.

Bring on the Bowie. "look back in anger!"

Posted by MF DU on 2006-12-04 17:14:55 +0000
Are we starting with the really early "laughing gnome" Bowie shit from the late 60's? I hope not. I move that we start with Space Oddity and go up to Reality, or even the third track on TV On the Radio' s new album...

Posted by MF DU on 2006-12-04 17:16:43 +0000
the refrence from Bowie's (mostly dreadful) 80's period. "The Return Of The Thin White Duke, throwing darts through lover's eyes..." - station to station

Beginning to end. Jump on/off as you see fit.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-12-04 17:59:20 +0000
Bite your tongue!! Bite it! His early Syd Barrett-inspired stuff is just as rewarding as his output during his glam and heroin phases. I'd like to start at the very beginning (a very good place to start!) and hop off after he left Berlin and "got clean" (apparently). I mean, his 80's, 90's and 00's albums had a couple of good songs each (bar the Tin Machine practical joke), but nothing like up to the standard of his 60's & 70's work.

Posted by bizquig3000 on 2006-12-04 17:59:30 +0000
No... we're starting with the laughing gnome-era misfires and of course we're making the requisite Labyrinth soundtrack and Tin Machine stops continuing on through all the ill-advised Trent Reznor/Prodigy robberies.

Put that magic spell on me, Smack that baby, Make him free! erm...

Posted by bizquig3000 on 2006-12-04 18:04:11 +0000
What part of "total immersion" don't you understand?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-12-04 18:05:50 +0000
No, no, dude, I'm loving it. Really. Just couldn't resist popping the Tina Turner wig pic up there. 100% behind you in this venture, I assure you.

Posted by jbcardinale on 2006-12-04 18:16:01 +0000
station to station was 1976...hopefully I can find the Lester Bangs review from Creem Magazine...great concert at The Boston Garden, opened w/Bunuel & Dali's short film, Un Chien Andalou.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-12-04 18:33:46 +0000
I always thought of Bunuel as a surrealistic grandfather to David Lynch. That film is crazy: the ants coming out of the guy's hand, slicing eyeballs open with razors (Talk about cutting yr face), good stuff...

Posted by WB Mason on 2006-12-04 18:46:50 +0000
Hey, I like tin machine! We should also watch all of his movies as well. The Hunger, The man who fell to earth, ziggy stardust etc....

Posted by bizquig3000 on 2006-12-04 19:13:29 +0000
After watching all of his 47 music videos with BOH, I'm going to say one thing: there's a whole lot of wigs Mr. David Jones employed that just don't work. And more than a couple outfits that make him look like a middle-aged housewife.

I know all of the words to every song in that movie. Thanks, Pamsterdam. the power of voodoo Who do? You do! Remind me of the babe.

BOH-- Do you own this DVD or did you rent it?

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-12-05 01:17:09 +0000
Own it.

If only my high school Physics teacher had been a lithe English rock star in skin-tight leather trousers. I would've memorized every word out of his mouth...

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-12-05 05:38:08 +0000
Oh, my goodness. I'll start podcasting the albums 1/1/07.

A little late to put on my Zune that's arriving any day now, but I can't wait for it when I get back to the States! I was completely obsessed with Bowie my last year in Boston. It wasn't ever very far from my bathroom stereo. Liked to start my morning with the second track off of his Best Of.

Posted by MF DU on 2006-12-05 14:42:21 +0000
I'm way excited about this new idea of yrs, BH. and I have all kinds of Bowie rabid fandom, so hopefully I will have a few helpful things to add here and there. re: another artist - after Bowie, how about Zappa? Beefheart? Ornette Coleman? T. Rex? Ennio Morricone? Fun, Fun, Fun...

Posted by pamsterdam on 2006-12-05 14:46:48 +0000
Hear hear! And I'd second any one of the suggestions MF DU makes for a follow-up.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-12-05 15:31:52 +0000
If you wanna prep it, DU, I'll immerse myself in one of those.

That is still up for debate.

sho nuff - would you like help with Bowie prep? (I only have like almost 2 and a half shelves full of the stuff for crying out loud)

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-12-31 00:52:11 +0000
Top. First two albums will go up in the next 48, before I go on vacation.

Posted by buzzorhowl on 2007-01-02 08:44:17 +0000
Okay. So here's the deal: My hard drive is down. I'm hoping it's a matter of buying a new power cable -- didn't have time to get one this weekend. Anyway, I had to re-download the two records. Got the first one (which is here ). Didn't get a clean copy of 'Space Oddity', which is the second in chronology. I'll have time to get one up when I get back from vacation in two weeks. Of course, if anyone wants to get the next one up in my absence, awesome. The file is encrypted using WinAce, which is a shareware program you can find and download here . I'll be uploading records every Monday (except for next week).

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-02 13:41:54 +0000
assuming that the RIAA doesn't help me join sadaam, I will see to getting Space Oddity up by next Monday. Have a good vaca, Buzz.
