Boston Herald - Op-ed page
To the desk of Virginia Buckingham:
May I respectfully suggest who ever titles Ms. Buckingham's pieces read them.
The bold title "Deval's grassroots more like Astroturf" is especially misleading as "astroturfing" is a political term for fake grassroots campaigns supported by lobbyists and corporations in an effort to appear to come from the constituents of a community, (ie. USA Next, Save our Species Alliance, Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, etc). Ms. Buckingham notes Patrick's team is truly involved in "civic engagement" with "43 community meetings" to solicit input, a far cry from astroturfing. This is an inexcusable error for your utmost political page.
The subtitle "Silent majority remains silenced" is inaccurate as the article discusses the opposite. The majority is silent by choice, not "silenced" by force. Ms. Buckingham even states this directly, "Under Patrick's strategy, the silent majority will still be silent... It is surely not the Patrick team's fault that most voters are too busy getting flu shots or getting a jump on their Christmas shopping to show up and give their 2 cents worth..."
I understand Ms. Buckingham probably did not write the titles herself, but two glaring errors in a singular title is extraordinarily sloppy.
Sincerely,
Edward Greene
