Saw the lobby cardboard structure for GH on my way in to see Children of Men yesterday.
Im getting psyched about this.

bump.
Coming Soon - I was reading somewhere that Rodriguez and Tarantino scratched the negatives on purpose a la Orson Welles's Citizen Kane* to give it a dingier and dirtier appearance.
*For altogether different reasons I'm sure, and no I'm not comparing the former filmmakers to the latter.

Easily the best film of 2007 so far.
If 'Grindhouse' was a Gorilla Suit, you would be able to see all of its seams, but that is meant as a compliment.
It seems you see less and less films that are lovingly handcrafted - most of the big budget ones feel churned out of a large software program with audience tested (lack of?)plot developments and characters.
The sci-fi goodness, heavy artillery, and badass spaghetti western style of the loner hero (Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodriguez) drag you into Planet Terror pretty quickly. Crazy cameos, Robert Rodriguez's cheesy synth score, and a lounge jazz version of Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk To Fuck" are all icing on the cake.
I can't/won't get into the add-ons in between Planet Terrorand Deathproof but they are worthwhile, funny, and disturbing often all at the same time.
The real piece de resistance, IMHO, comes with Tarantino's Death Proof.
All of QT's crazy film fagens, ridiculous and detailed dialogue, and re-found and recontextualized music are all here - but you also get something else besides a long talking piece. Real action created by humans and not heavily edited or created by computers / robots / C4RT agents.
Upon first viewing before the crazy pay-off, I had a first impression that Deathproof's talking segments were too long, but upon further consideration, the setup for what is about to transpire is craftsman like.
Can't wait to see this again.
It is reported that QT is shopping another print of Deathproof to the Cannes film festival, elongated and divorced from 'Grindhouse's' framing device. Count me in if that sees the light of day.
A+
(A for Planet Terror and Deathproof, and the extra plus for the ancillary features)

'Lost' fans will also have something to celebrate about Planet Terror...[/the lorbering continues in full effect]

word to the wise - the suits have been unhappy with the box office performance of this and if it doesn't do well this weekend there are stories / rumors circulating that this will be stripped from this "double feature" format.
It has also been confirmed that upon DVD release this will also be the case.
No idea what that means for all the fake trailers and cheesy intermission title cards, snack, and restaurant ads.
I Might have to go again to get the full effect...

Jesus, what a tour-de-force Grindhouse was.
The first film, the Rodriguez one, was great -- I agree with you, Du, about the seams. Seeing 'em made me appreciate the craft even more.
Tarantino is a much better actor than he used to be.
'Death Proof' was Hitchcockian, and almost (but not quite) abandoned the whole 70's scratched negative schtick. Great dialogue, and heavy Fagens (in both films).
The interstitial bits have been elevated to high comedy status: 'Thanksgiving' and 'Don't' both slay. Damn! (Anyone [aside from M.C.] remember Fatal Death?)
Can't wait for the DVD.

I have doubts that the DVD will present the package as it exists in theaters right now. I hope I'm wrong, but if you pardon the pun, I think the execs are going to take 'Grindhouse' to the chop shop to try and salvage some profit.

Yeah right... It's all about a fool and his money are soon parted. They'll DVD it up as two movies, and once that cash cow is milked dry, boom, the Deluxe Edition comes out. How many times have you rebought "Star Wars?"

[Being Defensive, Probably Unecessarily]No one is forcing you to give Red Cent One to this endeavor.
SW does not have any of the same financial issues that this pic does, either.
All I was saying is that returning $4 Million in the 2nd weekend of release where the total film cost $56 million to make is bad news for those of us that want to see the film again in its current state.
If they can't monetarily salvage this fucker in European theatrical release, there wont be multiple releases, just something stripped down that no one (well at least most film geeks) will want to buy because of its inferiority.
I like collecting movies and music, SFW?

I wasn't swinging punches at you. Rodriguez and Tarantino appeal to the uber geek-chich film-nerd DVD-collector crowd, so just wait and you'll see mutliple versions of this movie sold again and again and again.
