Easy Rider

I hereby challenge anyone to tell me why this film was NOT an amazingly overrated piece of shit. The following arguments will not be accepted: -Dennis Hopper's 'acting' -Jack Nicholson's meaningless role -Peter Fonda's non-role -Clumsy American flag imagery -Clumsier religious imagery -Castwide drug use. Go!

Had a long discussion in Film Class @ UNH about this once. The only sequences I liked were when Fonda discards his watch by the side of the road and the "we blew it man" conversation at the end. Otherwise, I had a real hard time "getting" this movie, although incoherence and fractured narratives help send a big "fuck you" to standard Hollywood filmmaking of the 60's, which needed films like Bonnie and Clyde, 2001, Easy Rider, The Graduate and the like to break the mold of the standard Rock Hudson / Doris Day screwball comedies. For more of this shit, read "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, the best book I've founf on American films of the late 60's and 70's (author Biskind maybe?? I cant remember as I borrowed it and dont have it in my collection) Rock Out. NP: The Melvins "Neither Here Nor There" CD / Book on Ipecac

Bad plot? yes. Sure, overrated. Yep, bizarre. I love this movie. It is more like a 'happening' than a film. A piece of filmed performance art. And the art? Maybe I would subtitle it 'a time-capsule of bottled cool.' However, I like Andy Warhol's films better, probably because they don't TRY SO HARD to be cool. They are edgier, grainier, more fucked up. "Easy Rider" is like Warhol for the masses, but I'm always fascinated by the crossover from counter-culture to mainstream.
