"Children of Men"

A dense, nuanced dystopia that is both completely believable and frightening as hell. Layer upon layer of symbolism and allegory, if you're so inclined, with frenetic action if you're not. The kind of film that DVD's were made for -- a chance to catch all of the nods, winks and jabs that flew by the first time. Right up there with "12 Monkeys."

The first reviews I saw made it look like a mix of 28 days later, the handmaid's tale, and brazil. Looking forward to it!

28 Days Later == the worst movie I've ever seen

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-01-15 19:12:16 +0000
Really?! Speaking of the worst movie ever, I saw Napoleon Dynamite last night. Jesus H Christ, what a waste of time.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-01-15 19:21:21 +0000
We may have to agree to disagree on movie taste.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-01-15 19:26:48 +0000
I'm down with that. For the record, these are films I appreciate: The Big Lebowski, Zoolander, Welcome to the Dollhouse, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and Dawn of the Dead. Films I do not appreciate include: Napoleon Dynamite, Ghost Ship, The Nun, and most war films.

I second the nay on N.D.

Thank you. Maybe the difference is that we don't find nerds intrinsically amusing.

Huh, do you like Zombie movies? Excellent "rage" metaphor that works for HIV AND terrorism as well as the capitalism metaphor in zombie movies. Made for less than $3 million. Decent flick.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-15 19:31:07 +0000
We have qualifications, after all.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-15 19:31:44 +0000
I never saw '28 Days...' but enjoy zombie movies.

Napoleon Dynamite = Best title sequence of the decade

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-15 19:33:48 +0000
I don't remember that bit -- how did it go?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-01-15 19:34:38 +0000
Dude. To say nothing of our mad numbchuck skillz.

The various working-class 70's meals on various working-class 70's carpeting and linoleum. Very droll.

Ninja please!

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-01-15 19:36:55 +0000
I'd vouch for it's quality.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-01-15 19:43:16 +0000
No, in general, I don't like zombie movies. The "rage" thing was so gay, they should have just said "they're zombies" and not bothered to explain it. All of the characters were lame, their motivations and actions stupid, and the consequences thereof unsatisfying. My wife and I almost broke up because she made me watch it, even though she doesn't like it either. I had to punish her with The Legend of Billie Jean, which she erroneously belives is awful. I, however, know it to be fantastic.

Ah, well, us elitist-liberal-northeast-types thought it was hilarious. "Look what those losers must subsist on! Har. Har. Har."

Posted by Miriam on 2007-01-15 20:07:48 +0000
Props to Legend of Billie Jean. I'm a big fan of that, Cry Baby, Better Off Dead, Bring It On, Honey, Everything Is Illuminated, Jarhead, Wild Orchid Too: Two Shades of Bleu, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Posted by virtue on 2007-01-15 20:19:14 +0000
Somehow bednknobs and broomsticks sounds like it ought to be the name of some hardcore gay porn. But then again, maybe that's just me.

Posted by Miriam on 2007-01-15 20:46:21 +0000
Why do you think I put it behind Wild Orchid Too?!

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-15 22:20:08 +0000
apparently you were doing other things upon the release of Ernest Goes To Camp

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-15 22:26:09 +0000
I was curious about this one already. Now that people are sounding off that its the Blade Runner of the 21st century (forgetting for the moment where I heard that from - sorry anout lack of source), there is no way I can avoid it - I have to get out and go soon...

Posted by virtue on 2007-01-15 22:34:25 +0000
Oh, it's pretty good--but not that good. Don't get your hopes up too high.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-15 23:06:15 +0000
Whatever. It's that good.

Posted by tgl on 2007-01-16 00:23:33 +0000
However, The Importance of Being Earnest at the A.R.T. was great. A farce bordering on burlesque. While the gag of the costume changes was completely forseeable, it was nonetheless welcome. Great set, too.

Chortle-inducing! That being said, in future please remind me not to post to Rideside after copious amounts of red wine.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-16 07:36:39 +0000
Why the hell not?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-01-16 11:15:08 +0000
Ahem.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-29 04:18:02 +0000
I just got done watching '28 Days Later.' For years I didn't think I was that into zombie movies, but I always wind up enjoying the hell out of 'em. I never questioned any motivations or anything like that.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-29 16:08:37 +0000
Shaun Of The Dead would be a good next destination if you are looking for reccomendations...

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-01-29 16:28:26 +0000
YES! and Dawn of the Dead. You could have yourself a double-feature.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-29 16:43:39 +0000
The low tech multiplayer Urban Dead Epoisses turned me on to is fun, but it really made me aware of how important it is for someone (Grand Theft Auto / Bully's Rockstar games, maybe?) to create the ultimate Console zombie video game. Something with crazy street maps and preventing the "you have 20 moves today before you fall asleep" crisis. Just my .02

Original "Dawn of the Dead". The remake is good but... Having said that Romero's newest, "Land Of the Dead", was disappointing. It's weird, Zombies come and go and then come and go. Could be all the end of the world crap happening. 28 Days Later is a great flick but I have a few problems with it... Like, why did they go through that stupid fucking tunnel?!!! Come on!!! I know...they needed to be somewhere safe before night fall....I don't give a shit...You don't go into a long, dark tunnel, that is probably blocked just for a good scene. Also... Did the military guys just inevitably HAVE to be dickheads? And...dude should have died going through that gate.
