24 Hour Party People

Zzz... Horrible? I've started "24 Hour Party People" twice now; never got passed 45 minutes. An earnest attempt, but it almost left me in a coma (in the bad way). I feel it would be designated "for completists only", if there was something they had completed. As a badly acted but apparently accurate historic piece, you'd never know why people liked the music to begin with. (D)

I liked the Joy Division bits b/c I knew the band's history, but couldn't get into the rave stuff at all.

I found it somewhat charming, if only because all Englishmen (and I mean all of them) between the ages of 30 and 40 are obsessed with the Madchester scene. They go weak at the knees at the mere mention of Bez. Although the Joy Division bits were fantastic, I wanted more of that and less of the, "Look at us, we English can be uninhibited, too! All we need is fistfuls of drugs!" Eh... the whole drunken/drugged (and often violent) boor aspect of English male 'culture' leaves me cold. And Manchester has, oh, so much to answer for.

Steve Coogan is my favorite working British actor.

I strongly recommend Bez's autobiography 'Freaky Dancin' Its a much better view of what was happening there than Steve Coogans crap Antony Wilson impression or Ralf Littles embarassing Hooky.

Bez wrote an autobiography?! Why do I always find these things out after Christmas? All I got for Huzb was a new backpack and some Carhartt.

'favorite working ________ actor' as a phrase continues to slay me. Chortle inducing

and the amazing thing is its REALLY good (and the word on the street is that it is his own work and not ghost written) - he and Shaun Ryder both come across as not exactly 'nice' people but real people caught up in a storm of bullshit that they are just riding for the hell of it. I strongly recommend it

Thanks, CTP! I'll order it now, and "wow" the fella on Valentine's. (It's really good? And he wrote it himself? I may need to read it myself...)

I read a little bit of it on our first tour. I was stunned to find it was fairly articulate. I just assumed all the drugs woulda fried his brain or whatever.

I worship him. I would very, very happily lick his boots. Oh my god.
