Oscars

The nominees are out. Rumor has it Ennio Morricone will receive the Honorary award.

Dude. How can Spike Lee not even be nominated?

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-23 17:11:55 +0000
Its Hollywood - not a show that fairly or justly rewards people. If he didn't win for Do The Right Thing or Malcolm X, it is doubtful that the stuff he is doing now will register, either.

Then why do they continue to nominate Martin Scorcese?

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-23 17:18:27 +0000
I dunno - Hollywood ultimately doesnt like him much either - remember 1980? Raging Bull got the shaft. How many times did Spielberg get repeadetly nominated and then snubbed until Saving Private Ryan? I loved Ordinary People, but c'mon against Raging bull? My guess on Hollywood being skittish on Spike is that the overt political themes in Mr. Lee's films make the suits nervous, which is sad, because he is so clearly a filmmaker who is unfraid to fail. (and I happen to disagree a lot with some of the political themes - but I remain a huge fan of his - you can't deny that he is a filmmaker of the highest order)

I would not put 'Raging Bull' in Marty's top five films, and I would put it in Bobby DeNiro's worst five. Sorry, it bores me to tears.

I'd be psyched to see Forrest Whittaker win one.

Are you saying Lee should've been nominated for 'Inside Man' or the documentary on Katrina?

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-01-23 18:11:41 +0000
The doc.

Idolatry!!

I love it when Epoisses comments on a topic by making a response post to an unrelated comment. It reminds me of Ralph Wiggum in a very appealing way. "Raging Bull was a terrible film, and I am surprised to read that you felt it was high quality. In fact, it was one of Bobby's worst films." "I like pizza!" [I'm paraphrasing, of course.]

My dad does this too, and from time to time when I find myself facing an argument I dont want to fight, I opt for "choosing another battle" as well. This can be used for either Wiggum style non-sequitur comedy or choosing to spend your time on other subjects. Either way, its a win win situation.

Favorite nominations so far: Mark Wahlberg 'supporting actor' in The Departed (A gentle dig to Jack Nicholson) The Prestife 'art direction'. (I really liked this movie's look).

I guess I should see babel. It's the first truly "international" film, according to the news

I second that. His doc on NOLA really helped me prepare mentally for what I did in December down there. That, and there were so many moments when I couldn't even look at the screen. Very powerful.

Anyone understand why "The Fountain" wasn't nominated for Visual Effects? That's just dumb. That movie was all about visual effects...and editing. And sets and make-up. Lame. Totally depressing film, but visually stunning and set-up in a creative way.

MF DU, I mis-read that comment as: "It's Hollywood - not a show for just retards people."

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-25 18:45:38 +0000
Hollywood has been retarding the development of people's tastes for a good 100 years or so - lol
