Vandermark 5 in Somerville Ma 02/13/07 (TUE)

Johnny D's. Cdub, Bizquig, TGL, anyone else: interested in calling ahead for a table to get dinner and then hear some well crafted improvisation?

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-25 18:46:55 +0000
[lorbering] sigh.... dinner for one, please...

Alas, we have rehearsal.

an inconvienient truth

Wasn't I just lamenting that I've never seen live jazz, other than at some place like The Good Life? I'll be there.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-01-26 05:22:34 +0000
I think I can make this. I might have to move some things around, but I can most likely do it.

Posted by Riotous Nutjob on 2007-01-29 12:59:37 +0000
Yep, I'm in on this one.

Posted by tgl on 2007-01-29 17:56:30 +0000
I admit my interest in Ken Vandermark is mainly predicated on his name always reminding me of Van der Graaf Generator. Not to mention, Van der Graaf generator

I will call and try to reserve a table. If not, I am not worried about at least getting into the show / ticket availability. I will keep you alls updated.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-29 21:55:14 +0000
Table for 4 Reserved. I didn't have to put $$$ down for table or tickets. If there are more or less than 4 folks, I will need to know so I can call them so our table is appropriately sized. It is also possible to just go to the show. the cover for show itself is $15 without a table. With a table, (per Johnny D's expectations, not MF Du's) each person has a $10 food minimum in addition to the cover charge. Please let me know if this is a problem 'cause I can easily either cancel the table or reduce the table's # of occupants. So please either hit me up via e-mail (listed under gang members) or post yr questions here. thx MF UMLAUT

Bump - Is everyone interested in this show cool w/ the above specs, or do I need to call to make some adjustments? Also - The guy @ Johhny D's said those aiming to have dinner and see the show should get there @ 7:30. the show itself is at 8:30 lemme know! thx MF DÜ

Posted by tgl on 2007-01-30 22:05:02 +0000
I hope I'm counted. 7:30pm works for me (warm-up 6:30pm at Redbones).

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-01-31 05:07:23 +0000
I am still not sure I can do this. I will be teaching at MassArt on Monday, and then at Tufts on Wednesday, so it might be tough for me to get Tuesday off from the restaurant as well. I could be there around 10?

Posted by MF DU on 2007-01-31 13:57:21 +0000
I know the first set of music is @ 8:30 - traditionally w/ gigs like this, the musicians will play two sets - I will call Johnny D's today to confirm. If they play 2 sets, Conor would mos def make 2nd set. Here's who I have for the table circa 7:30 (Im guessing 3 now if Conor is arriving circa 10pm): -TGL -Riotous Nutjob -Motley DÜ Please jump in if you are not included in this and want to be. I will keep you all updated...

This sounds super to me.

Where is Redbones? I can try to zoom from Rhode Island to make it for this...

Right in Davis Sq., on the street off of Elm just across from the Burren. Dunkin Donuts and Wainwright Bank closeby on Elm.

Ok - Reservations for 3 @ 7:30 Per J.D's, there is no support act, so the V5 WILL be playing two sets - 2nd set time is approx 10:00 pm. Cover charge is still in effect @ 10:00pm Looking very forward to this. I believe there are samples of free music on kenvandermark.com if yr curious.

bump - I know the weather is sposed to be bad tonite - but I am still determined to make it. If Boston turns into Hoth, I will post updates here, but Im hoping other folks are still considering this event a go..

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-13 15:17:01 +0000
The snow starts after midnight, and I'll be long gone by then. Show's at 8pm, right? I'm still planning on "prepping" at Redbones circa 6:30pm.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-02-13 19:30:18 +0000
oh, ok - wasnt 100% sure weather-wise on that. (is anyone, really?) I can try to do the Redbones thing, but I will mos def be at Johnny D's @ 7:30 PM. Looking forward.

Wow! One of the more interesting performances I've seen in a long time. Reminds me of the time I first heard a John Harbison work; I was struck by the thought "I didn't realize ______ could sound like this". With Harbison _______ was an orchestra, with Vandermark it was a jazz combo. There were these skronky sections that reminded me of Morphine (probably just the baritone sax. sound), as well as lyrical sections that had a Coleman-Cherry feel. The combo as a whole seemed to be channeling a Hard Bop sound, which is a good thing. The weakest link might have been the drummer... a bit too rock, although a rock sound probably works best. I wasn't entirely impressed with Vandermark's sound on any of his three horns: bari sax., alto clarinet, clarinet. The alto and tenor sax. player was competent. One solo in particular, I think it was during the third song of the first set, was particularly amazing. MF DÜ informs me the the cellist was new, and had replaced a trombonist. The distorted cello sound might have been the most surprising part of the evening. [*****]

Posted by MF DU on 2007-02-14 15:17:58 +0000
The cellist is Fred Lonberg-Holm. Last night when I first heard him using effects pedal and distortion, I was skeptical, thinking it might be gimmicky, but it fit the music. Distortion on a cello, while similar to an electric guitar in some respects, is much less "bright", "punchy" or "trebley" (10 D - I'm pretty sure that that last one is not a word, but thanks for bearing with me). It retains a warmer sound but still has the blaring distorted quality. There was this passage of his in the first set where Holm came in and it sounded almost exactly like something out of Iron Man or Sweet Leaf. After that, I knew Mr. Lonberg-Holm and I would get along just fine. Dave Rempis, Vandermark's sidekick reedsman (alto to Vandermark's Tenor / Bari / Clarinet / Tarigato / Whatever the Fuck) was in his element, playing like a straight out vicious secret weapon. Excellent evening, indeed.

The Glob's take here. on the "Sound Effects" blog.

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-14 15:38:12 +0000
He might be a brilliant cellist, but he's got to get rid of that hat. He's even wearing it on the liner notes to "Discontinuous Line".

Really, sorry to have missed it. I got out of work around 11:30 and was exhausted. Seemed like a great time. What time did it finish? Could I have caught any of it?

Posted by MF DU on 2007-02-14 18:49:55 +0000
you were definitely missed, but you were right to sit it out given the time you were out. - I think it was done by 10:45 or 11:00 ish. even if you could catch the last 5 minutes they probably still wouldve charged you $12. Rest assured, I will post when he comes through again.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-02-14 18:51:30 +0000
I will be sure and get the night off next time. I'm actually really bumbed about missing it.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-02-14 18:52:49 +0000
No worries - Im sure we could cobble together a mix tape for ya (I guess I should probably get off my ass and finish the Ornette one, first...)
