The Lite-Brite attack of 2007

Menino needs to either apologize to the people of Massachusetts for the police's actions, or he needs to resign. I would also expect the police commissioner to make an apology regarding the time and money they wasted. Lastly, the people in the bomb squad who thought these were bombs must to be fired, immediately. There was no threat. There was no intention of faking a threat. There was no malice. The 12 other cities in the US understood what was going on. Egg on Boston's face, and the rest of the world laughs. So embarrassing, I can't believe I want to buy a house here.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-02-01 18:14:53 +0000
Seriously. It's funny, because the police force was talking about the 'swift action' taken in the name of warding off terrorism. Those things were up there for three weeks.

As embarassing as I agree this is for the City of Boston and The Commonwealth that contains it, I also think this ad campaign was a bad idea, espcially noting the paranoia of Our Fair Nation these days.

I had Danger Doom all cued up this morning...

Just stick a fork in their ass and turn em' over, they're done.

Hear hear.

Just because some people are paranoid, doesn't mean they have a right to misuse resources.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-02-01 20:31:10 +0000
Being paranoid is not forgivable. Being insensitive to other people's paranoia is equally unforgivable.

Posted by tommy on 2007-02-01 20:41:18 +0000
What's also unforgivable about this whole thing is that apparently some people think it's okay for a corporation to clandestinely install advertisements on public property. Totally unacceptable. I hope there's at least a hefty fine for this. Check it out... you can buy one on The Ebay

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-02-01 20:55:03 +0000
Should we place blame on the makers of the LED's for underestimating the stupidity of the city government?

Posted by G lib on 2007-02-01 21:45:31 +0000
apparently some people think it's okay for a corporation to clandestinely install advertisements on public property. And not tell them about it. That's a really fucking good idea. And then arrest the installers, rather than the advertising company that came up with the idea, the marketing company that hired them, or the Turner entertainment company that oversaw the whole thing. Way to stick it to the grunt who glued it to the bridge.

Hopefully ol' Ted's attorneys can get those kids off.

More of the same.

This is absolutely hilarious from where I'm standing... ...but my workmates are too busy still talking about the State of the Union address to have even noticed this story... ...so I've decided not to call their attention to it until after it's blown over and the authorities stop acting like bozos. Hopefully sometime soon.

While the ad campaign might ultimately be a bad idea morally if you happen to be fooled by it and play with your poop and be in Boston, I can't see how it won't ultimately generate ratings, or at least interest, in Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's like when all those Florida prosecutors went after 2 Live Crew or when G H Bush went after Ice T for Cop Killer. The more Deval Patrick and Menino tell people that shit like this isnt funny, the more young people will gravitate towards mooninites urging people to drink digital vats of urine. Bitches.

Wow. Life-affirming. Punk might not be dead yet.

Lets not stop at Ted Turner, here. As a frequent Boston visitor, I feel the performer / Adult Swim participant MF DOOM, while my mentor and leader, owes us an apology as well. Sincerely, MF DÜ

I hope they hire Scott Boras to be their agent.

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-02 17:32:26 +0000
Punk is dead. This was a marketing ploy in order to pump a television show owned by Turner Broadcasting and prepare the audience for a movie to be released in the next month. These guys weren't "stickin' it to the man", they are being paid by the man!

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-02-02 18:09:52 +0000
They got paid $300 to hang signs. The press conference was all them.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-02-02 19:09:45 +0000
Are you fucking kidding? That press conference was one of the biggest 'stick it to the man' episodes, since PIL on Tom Snyder's talk show in the early 80's. Plus some of Peter Berdovsky's lite-brite artwork is still around MassArt. It is his medium, and he got paid by a company to continue doing his artwork. No, the images weren't his entirely, but to get paid doing what you want, is no small feat. Imagine if tgl got paid $300 to put on a slide show? Pretty punk.

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-02 19:21:09 +0000
So when Ari Fleischer or Tony Snow stonewall the press, that's punk? Art is a gift. These two yokels are involved in commerce.

Posted by Riotous Nutjob on 2007-02-03 03:18:56 +0000
They were advised by their lawyer not to talk to the press about the case, which is exactly what they did. And they did it in astounding, I would say artful fashion. Being a press secretary requires a certain art, some of which involves stonewalling. It's part of their job. What these guys did at that press conference wasn't being paid for by the $300. They did it for the pleasure/annoyance of TV watchers and radio listeners (and of course the media) everywhere...so very punk! Even if they were paid to do the art itself, I think their performance puts these guys squarely in the realm of the rarely seen Public Punk Bomb. They've had some of the greatest 15 minutes I've seen in a long time. When punks and mainstream journalism and terrorism collide.

$750K Boston spent according to that Bloomberg article Conor posted? Menino is playing with his poop. Yeah, I said it.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-02-04 08:08:15 +0000
This will all be discussed in the Sex Pistols unit on Wednesday.

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-04 18:59:38 +0000
Fleischer and Snow are public servants, I have a reasonable expectation for they to be forthcoming to the press. So, my analogy wasn't that great. My point wasn't that I was being shortchanged by their antics. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed their "performance". Private citizens are not obligated to speak with the press; that's not what irks me. Although, I heard that the "hair styles" bit was somewhat motivated by an upcoming show on the Cartoon Network about... hair styles. I can't find anything to support that claim. So were they stonewalling or shilling (again)? I'm irked that a marketing and advertising campaign is being lauded as art. I don't agree and won't be buying it. Are their lawyers Public Defendents or is this cost being picked up by the ad agency? Sounds like they're getting more than $300.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-02-04 19:15:52 +0000
The Sex Pistols were/are a marketing and advertising campaign that was being lauded as art. Do you like them?

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-04 19:19:58 +0000
No.

Zing!

Posted by MF DU on 2007-02-04 23:38:36 +0000
I'm irked that a marketing and advertising campaign is being lauded as art. Im guessing, too, that TGL is not a big Warhol fan. Campbell's Chunky soup anyone? (Isn't the NFL a sponsor?) Commerce, while in most circumstances makes art difficult, can also intentionally or unintentionally make great art. For example, filmmakers like Spike Lee and musicians like John Zorn (sorry guys, I try not to drop the Zorn, but its impossible) have frequently in the past worked for a popular ad agency named Weiden and Kennedy. The W and K opportunities have yielded Mars Blackmon (originated from Lee's She's Gotta Have It as well as the Sega Naked City/Torture Garden spots featuring Sonic The Hedgehog. Filmmakers sometimes (besides the lure of easy money which Im sure is strong) gravitate towards commercial work because they can make a "bite size" bit of art that they aren't wrapped up in for an entire year or longer. Concept ---> 30 seconds of music / film / visual idea --> done. However, my argument here might not hold a lot of water as far as the "Lite Brite" incident as Conor so eloquently puts it, because Lee, Zorn et. al are doing this shit on purpose. I would move to say that this whole Adult Swim thing is art on accident because of the ludicrous response of Boston Authorities. Just another unsolicited .02
