I know this has been discussed before, re: viewing options
Yeah, I sort of missed that one but recently I started rocking the
threaded list expanded so I would be more aware of how I was responding and...
I hate it.
I'm back to Flat List expanded. If you can't tell what I am replying to I'm sorry but I much prefer seeing posts in the order they happen.
I'll quote you if I have to.
I'm just a fan of a simple, standardized format that avoids confusion and fosters communication.
But, ya know, obviously I must be an idiot.
Why am I able to edit this and not others?
Do I care if I can edit at all?
The standardized format already exists. It is to use the 'reply' feature in a threaded list. Why "ignore" this and create confusion?
If you want to standardized where you can reply to someone replying to a post...than do it, because as of right now we are essentially looking at two different boards.
I think you've got a handle on this threading thing, Rory. We're having TWO CONVERSATIONS AT ONCE!
Even in flat mode, though, each post has its own "reply" link. Just click "reply" next to the post you want to reply to. Flat-listers will see the post at the end, and threaded-listers will see the post interleaved as appropriate.
I'm not sure what people are disagreeing about. View it however you want, and reply to the post to which you are replying. Right? Am I missing something?
Does someone need MF D<b>Ü</b> to come in and cut someone's face?
Cause I'll do it if need be!
"I'm back to Flat List expanded. If you can't tell what I am replying to I'm sorry but I much prefer seeing posts in the order they happen.

I'd have to side with Rory on this.
Rideside in the past offered choices that if one individual user took advantage of, other users would deride the individual user for choosing it. (I'm thinking specifically of signatures)
I dont know ultimately if people are making fun of Rory, but if its on the menu, you should be able to order it without the waiters, other staff or diners giving you crap for asking about options that are presented to you.
And if someone orders the lamb's blood sausage with pickled octopus chutney and a scoop of rum raisin ice cream on top, I am allowed make fun of them all I want.
The threaded list allows those who aren't always on the board to post relevant comments without having to quote others.
The flat list is much easier on the eye and makes more immediate sense to people who are just joining the conversation - I can imagine that this is especially (for lack of a better word) intimidating to non-oldtimers.
If we all commit to quoting - when necessary - previous posts, then the flat list could be the way to go. Again, just my two cents.
In a room, the last thing said tends to drive the conversation. But sidebars happen, and five people responding to the last post, then three people responding to the second of the first five responses (but before the last two of the first five are submitted) can make things confusing. Extensively quoting to give context ruins the flow of the page (in the same way the signatures do). The slow march to the right (mostly the narrowing of the post's bounds) is a bit annoying, though.
I like that people tend to post in paragraphs, instead of the stream-of-consciousness style that more typifies a IM or IRC session. The <a href="http://board.lemmingtrail.com">lemmingtrail</a> board isn't the sort of conversation-style I'm interested in following, I guess.
It works for everyone if the "reply to the post you are replying to" is followed. You see a post you want to respond to, use the "reply" link just below it. This gives you the respond page, with the post to reference, and it maintains the flow of the conversation for those interested in following it that way.
<li> You should remove the fixed width restriction on display, we've been through this one as well.
<li> Please don't encourage quoting, it's worse than signatures in its content dilution.

<snark>Ahi tuna well done... right away sir!</snark>
B. Agreed.
Why is it ok for more seasoned posters to heap on all kinds of unecessary shit to less seasoned posters who are trying to be constructive and add to the conversation?
This reminds me of the scene in <i>Mr. Mom</i> where all Michael Keaton wants to do is drop his blessed kids off at school only to be thwarted by a bunch of over zealous coupon clipping PTA <b>Ü</b>ber moms that all tell him in a sing songy chorus that <b>"you're doing it wrong"!</b>
I would say, "Jesus, what the hell were you thinking? You totally fucked up! The less seasoned posters don't know how to use the 'reply' key, and then give seasoned posters shit when they point out how confusing their posts are. This is so lame. Jesus Christ, go back to your cave and die again."
Given the choice between that or no posts from Rory (and probably other new or potentially easily thwarted potential posters) at all, I find this to be a moot point.
Then don't give us shit when we don't know what he's talking about.

Also politically speaking, tgl's actions would fall under "closed minded, intolerant, fascist." Not "liberal" at all.
But maybe we're really not arguing about viewing, but instead arguing about how to reply (which seems like a totally separate issue to me). There seems to be only two possible ways of replying:
1) Click "reply" next to the post you're replying to.
2) Click "reply" next to some random other post.
Are there people arguing that (2) is a good idea?

There are two fouls on the thread.
Unsportsmanlike baiting, offense.
Unsportsmanlike baiting, defense.
The fouls offset.
Stop being a pussy.
Stop being a pussy.
Stop being a pussy.
Stop being a pussy.
Lame fake account.
Fifteen post penalty.
Resume thread.
I'm an idiot.
It was unclear and I was too lazy to spell it out. Must be the overt amount of tuna fish I ate an hour ago.
I'm going to have to own up to a little manipulation here because it was meant for the health of the board and now it seems...battle lines have been drawn.
So on Rideside's birthday I decided to do my yearly invite to some people I was pretty sure would play well here.
Ya know, I sort of like this place as opposed to the other places I may or may not go to.
My initial post was an attempt to open up the format debate and also make people aware of the options that were at the bottom of their page.
Apparently some people felt attacked and some people agreed with me.
To the people who agreed with me...I'm sorry.
My whining should not have fucked up your experience here.
To the people who thought it was another opportunity to belittle my intelligence.
You look like ass hole's.
Here is what I know will not be my final thought on this but might come close.
Tommy is pretty much right about stuff.
It is a replying issue, my point is the time issue when you reply to a specific poster instead of replying to the entire post.
When I came back to this thread today my point was illustrated in that
I had to go back and read the entire thread to see all the new responses.
I had to do this because Terry decided to standardize what he thinks is the best format. Fair enough. I did call for it didn't I.
So from now on I will simply reply in the box at the end of the page and not reply to anyone specifically because in a large thread it would probably be lost.
This thread is a very convoluted attempt at a FAQ for rideside.net:8080.
If you are not scared off by this point you are nuts and should probably post here.
Thank you.
So glad that I did follow all of that, so I guess that makes me as smart as at least some of you, perhaps smarter than others. Not that it matters here, or anywhere else.
Glad to be part of this community, and glad that our parlor conversations are flowing regardless of how they appear to flow on screen.
Canadian pronunciation, please! "A Boot".
