Although, comments themselves aren't "threaded" or "flat" it's only the way one views them. You could view an entire discussion in threaded mode, and as long as every comment was a reply to the original post, it would look flat.
So glad I was in a meeting from 1-3:30 yesterday afternoon, the "re: viewing options" discussion was hilarious, but only as an observer, I think.

When you say, "reply to the post you are replying to", it means nothing as post means two different things in this context.
...I'm pretty sure everyone knows what you mean, but then again...
