Files are here. Released April 13, 1973 on RCA Records Album hit #17 on the US Charts in 1973. "Jean Genie" hit #2 on the UK singles chart in 1972 and 1973, and #71 in the U.S. in 1973. "Drive In Saturday" hit #3 in the UK in 1973.

I have always used the title track's piano freakout as a gateway drug to get people turned on to the merits of "freer" styles of playing music... A+ Also 'Drive In Saturday''s reed playing, and 'Time''s hum along chorus and the "We Should Be Home By Now" line floor me everytime I hear it.

After the enormous success of “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust”, Bowie wrote a number of songs while touring for Ziggy. Most ended up on the “Aladdin Sane” album. Featuring The Spiders from Mars band (guitarist Mick Ronson, bassist Trevor Bolder and drummer Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey), pianist Mike Garson was added (and remains with Bowie today) to the lineup. It would seem to the listener that most of Bowie's new tracks delved into the “glam” era which became one of his signatures. Some ‘pop’ songs were added (“Let's Spend the Night Together”), some ‘bluesy sounds’ (“The Jean Genie”), as well as some ‘psychedelic’ sound (“Watch that Man”). As for the title track, I cannot come up with a category. “Panic in Detroit” speaks for itself as the best song on the album – in my opinion. Was Bowie still worried about his family's history of mental illness -- "A Lad Insane?"

I got this cd from a friend in 95. I never really thought it was Bowie’s best but now I might have to reconsider. Probably cause I listened to it a thousand times. Boy is it sick. I always thought this one was really stones influenced. The rock songs anyway. Like watch that man wow panic in detroit sounds a lot better with a ton of bass Cracked actor sounds like t rex but with high heels on I always liked the Time lyrics. (qualudes and red wine) (Left you dreamless) He performs this song in the Ziggy Stardust live performance. Prettiest star - genius spend the night together - is that lou reed. I downloaded Lou Reed Transformer last night. It’s great. Jean jeanie - this album is too good aaaahhhhhh It’s too much. I’m going to have to buy a unitard.

This one's okay -- sounds pretty good (effects on "Drive In Saturday" = trippy!), but lacks focus. Still, though, up there with Ziggy and Hunky Dory.

I've been through this one a few more times -- much stronger than I had thought.

FWIW: there's some Q magazine (or maybe it was MOJO) retrospective of Mr. David Jones himself. Tons of interviews and whatnot. Flipped through it at Borders on lunch break. Good stuff. Especially the essay in favor of Tin Machine. Damn, there's still great records to come.

Recently?, or are you talking a few years back? I have a huge flippin MOJO dedicated to Bowie and it might be what yr talking about, but its 2-3 years ago - coincided with the release of 'Reality' his last studio album...

Maybe it was Q then. It's in your music section of your neighborhood Borders.

it was Mojo. I also flipped through at Borders. Good photos confusing chronological order in regards to record release. I still need to buy it.

Did you feel gipped out of record review for his whole catalog? I love record reviews. All I could find was "suggested mix tapes," which I hate to say it, seems to be the way to go with Mr. Jones. The "hits" are great, lots of lesser material too, though.

Yeah I looked at it again tonight, mainly because the only beacons of culture in Shrewsbury are Borders and Newbury Comics and it's $12. I guess I was looking for more of an explanation on the song inspirations. THe albums aren't really critiqued which would have been fun to see how they match up to what we are saying.

I'd be happy to drop off the MOJO I have on the coffee table of H3W the next time I'm there (with a vague hope somewhere of getting it back some day maybe)- lemme know...
