Obama '08

I've decided I can't wait around for the Democrats or the Republicans to nominate someone I can get excited about. Holding my nose in the general election is not enough! (Oh, were it 2000 again...) So, this time around, I'm throwing my hat in now. I'm voting for the candidate I want in 2008, not the one that everyone else picks. So... I'm for Smoky Barry Hussein Obama. A Marlboro Man. I even signed up to to volunteer at barackobama.com. No word yet, probably hiring top-level campaign operatives first. In the mean time...

So psyched too tgl, though pretty much anything either party throws out will be infinitely better than our current leader.

I know I'm getting shit for it, so why not get the crap thrown at me now: Giuliani in 08! Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, etc.

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-21 04:04:04 +0000
Thrice married, gay-lovin' Rudy? Fine with me. Good luck in the primary! America's Mayor™. What about Mitt "Flip" Romney?

Still my best vote: both times (1996, 2000)

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-02-21 04:31:26 +0000
Hey, I'm down with Rudy, but I'm not sure I have the stomach for the deficit and tax burden he might create.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-02-21 12:39:49 +0000
2 way tie for me between Rudy or John... For some weird reason I have been having fun watching the Barack star, too... (Too much barley?)

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-21 13:18:46 +0000
McCain's got the same problems Giuliani has. Liked by independents, not entirely embraced by the Republican establishment. If he can get through the primaries, he could be a big hit in the general election. (Provided the intervention into the Iraqi Civil War goes well... wanna take bets?)

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-02-21 14:59:50 +0000
What's the name of the guy from the midwest who supports workers' rights, American farmers, and the unions? I'm voting for him. Again. He keeps changing his name, though...

Have any of you cats seen this? There was an article in last month's Atlantic. Thoughts or Opinions, anyone?

Posted by tgl on 2007-02-21 15:34:28 +0000
Yeah, I heard it. Unity is for Pooooo-saaaays! Anyone who claims "Hilary Clinton is just too decisive to be a viable presidential candidate" deserves a slap in the head, especially if they voted for Bush in 2004.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-02-21 15:39:50 +0000
I've always admired McCain's ethics and backstory, but never his policies. And then he started waffling b/c this is likely his last shot at becoming president. Pass.

Gore like a turtle.

And the southern accent came from where exactly? Her time in Arkansas? I have goose bumps... in the bad way.

Posted by tgl on 2007-03-05 15:58:09 +0000
I'm not going to watch that clip. I started to watch a clip on the Channel 7 news last night... but I couldn't hack it. To be fair, Obama proclaiming "Don't tell me I'm not coming home to Selma" was also a bit jarring. To be especially fair, Clinton is just doing what every other politician does (Bush included), she just can't pull it off in the South.

Posted by tgl on 2007-03-07 03:24:29 +0000
Been thinking more about this... I'm miffed that a politician is a bad actor? That's crazy, my problem is with politicians who are essentially actors. Maybe the thing with Clinton is this: McCain is a bad actor --supposedly-- but at least he has the good sense of not trying to act.

Sorta fun to watch the numbers go up. You could be one of them! Do it!

If thrice-married (to thrice-married Judy), mob-affiliated, homo-loving Rudy Giuliani is the GOP nominee, I'd be thrilled. Rudee, supporters: What are you going to do ensure he beats out Fred Thompson?

Forwarded from my cousin in California: Subject: Who is Barack Obama?? Who is Barack Obama? He's "ARTICULATE and CLEAN," yes, but just a little background for those of you that may not know, or realize what a threat this man is if elected to the highest office in our country. Who is Barack Obama? Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black Muslim from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white atheist from Wichita,Kansas. Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father Returned to Kenya. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a radical Muslim >From Indonesia. When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama attended a Muslim school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a Catholic school. Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He Is quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school." Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education. Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama'smother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta. Wahabism is the radical teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background. Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy. Please forward this to everyone you know. The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside, what better way to start than at the highest level. AWAKE AMERICA!!!!!

Too bad he wasn't running during the primaries...might have pulled votes from Obama, Paul and Huckabee!

Posted by tgl on 2008-02-25 18:06:00 +0000
I can't stand this idea of "pulling votes". Maybe I'm just a defensive '00 Nader voter, but when does a candidate get my vote before I've cast it? It's not a zero-sum game. Without Nader would I have voted for Gore? Without Obama would I have voted for Clinton? I really don't know. It might work that way for some people, but not all. A vote for one politician does not "come from" another politician: I can always choose not to vote. This is why Clinton's losing; she counted all her votes back in November, before any were cast.

Posted by jbcardinale on 2008-02-25 18:23:03 +0000
Reality: Does Nader have any chance of winning? No. Are most people who vote for Nader likely to have voted for a Democrat or Republican otherwise? A Democrat. Hence he's pulling votes away from the Democrats. It's what always happens when there's a third candidate in our one party, oh excuse me, two party system. When I read Nader was running, my first reaction was I wonder how much he's being paid.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2008-02-25 18:24:57 +0000
Only naïve and foolish voters voted for Nader in 2000, which means they were probably pulled from Bush anyway.

Posted by tgl on 2008-02-25 19:46:10 +0000
My reaction like James Fallows.

Posted by tgl on 2008-02-25 19:58:18 +0000
BTW, 47% of Florida '00 Nader voters may have voted for Gore. True, that's ~45,000 votes or 100 times Bush's margin of victory. 30% of those voters may have stayed home... not zero-sum. I just think it's perverse to blame Nader for Gore's failings. --- Best thing that happened to DLC-aligned moderate Democrats: Sept 11, 2001. "Vote for me or in the event of a terrorist attack the Republican candidate will start a war in an unrelated country that will cost us 3,200+ American lives, 30,000+ wounded, $200 million a day, tens of thousands of civilians deaths, and counting."

Posted by MF DU on 2008-02-25 20:28:40 +0000
Nader™! When you absolutely, positively need a media circus - go no further.

Posted by tommy on 2008-02-25 21:37:47 +0000
Perhaps you could say that about Nader voters in places like Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin, but it certainly doesn't apply in Mass. Everyone knew Gore was winning Mass in 2000. A few percentage points more or less made no difference. On the other hand, a couple of percentage points for Nader did mean something. Since he exceeded 3% of the vote, the Green Party became an "officially recognized" party in Massachusetts, which meant it was a lot easier for Green Party candidates to get on the ballot for other offices. That's why I voted for Nader in 2000 -- so that I could then have the option of voting for Green Party candidates for governor, city council, dog catcher, etc. If polls show Clobama leading McCain by a wide margin in Mass this year, I will probably vote for a third-party candidate again for the same reason.

There are the fat pins (big ball), and then there are the top heavy pins (candle-pin). I have never seen 'fat, top heavy pins'.
