Define A Thon

Mahatma Chani, Ten Diamonds, (other wordophiles on RSN?) Coming Soon! Special Event! DEFINE-A-THON 2007! Thursday, April 19 The Harvard Book Store, The Brattle Film Foundation and Houghton Mifflin present DEFINE-A-THON 2007! Doors at 7:30pm Event begins at 8:00pm Join the DEFINE-A-THON phenomenon! The DEFINE-A-THON is a game of vocabulary strength that "ups the ante" on word-based competition. Developed by the editors of the American Heritage Dictionary, this quick-paced game takes participants beyond the spelling bee. Why? Because the ability to spell a word doesn't necessarily mean that you know how to USE the word. American Heritage Dictionary Senior Editor Steve Kleinedler will host the game. He'll give each contestant a definition, followed by several possible answers. The contestant must choose the correct one. As the competition progresses, the degree of difficulty increases until two contestants are left. These two players will enter the final round with new rules and higher stakes. Pit your knowledge of English against that of your friends and colleagues - the DEFINE-A-THON will separate the vocabulary geniuses from the vocabulary wannabees. Winner will receive an American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition and the two runner ups will receive American Heritage College Dictionaries. Winners will also receive prizes from Harvard Bookstore and the Brattle. $5 to attend / $5 to participate Advance tickets and pre-registration available soon at brattlefilm.org! Harvard Book Store

Honor took part in the Brattle spelling bee last year. It was a lot of fun (for us in the audience, and I think probably also for her). I'm not allowed to participate, because I actually wrote or proofread many of the questions. But I urge you all to give it a shot. Last time they had beer.

Umm, bad name dropping. But I did win a t-shirt. I wore while exercising just last week. Definitely down for this! last year there weren't any words spelled that I didn't know the meaning of.

Malapropisms are so 2006.

Sounds like fun. Hope one of y'all wins something! Totally respectable bragging rights with this one.

Yep. I think one needs to be in Lexington at 6am to see the reenactment of the terrorists attack on the courageous British troops. 4/19 Never Forget.

Hey, the person who entered the spelling bee was known at the time on Rideside as "honor."

I'm planning on being there. I can certainly see describing them as rebels. But they weren't hiding bombs to blow up civilians. They stood on the town green, outnumbered almost ten to one, and refused to disband when the riot act was read to them. Though they weren't wearing regular uniforms, they were an openly military force facing their enemy in public. Not terrorists, even if they did fire the first shot.

Just throwing it out there... I was imagining this to be like 2001 monolith-sized. What a disappointment.

It's hard to get a good look at it, too, with all those people standing around and gawking at it. Like la Gioconda.

Actually, that person has never been known as honor on this board.

Hmm. Not exACTly. Sorry.

HtL!

Wow, I didn't even notice the name drop. I think my brain automatically translates to your name regardless. Although virtue does conjure up an image of you in a toga, I have to admit.

I've reserved spectator's tickets for me and the missus, and a contestant's ticket for her-who-does-not-wish-to-be-named-on-this-thread. Wine and beer will be for sale in the back of the room.

BUMP! Chippy has a fake staff meeting scheduled today so that ABC (or is it CBS?) can film the 'making of' part of their upcoming segment on the Define-a-thon. Chippy on TV! Hilarious! Details to follow.

I lost, alas. Next time I'll have to bone up on my biology and geology.

Bummer. Better luck next time.
