If anyone wanted to argue that these Berlin years produced Bowie's best work, one could make the case for "Heroes" as being his best work ever. I don't go quite that far. This album was produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti (who in my opinion gives any work instant credibility). Brian Eno and Robert Fripp (who flew in from the U.S. to record his parts in just one day) made the scene on this record and along with Bowie, added a tiny amount of disco and jazz along with some funky sound effects, basic sax and piano. A very impressive and entertaining piece of work. Fripp's usual ego and virtuoso was kept to a minimum here, but was enough to take any resemblance to "pop" away. This album was no "Laughing Gnome." "Joe The Lion" and "Heroes" are great examples of great works. Bowie and Eno commit most of second half of the album to wordless, experimental pieces that have a "jamming session" feel. Some might argue that it was leftover "Low" material - but that is not in fact true. As with "Low," this album was cutting edge, but lacked much of the musical substance of its predecessor. The album starts very strong and keeps your attention. Some of the latter tunes are arguably dull, but come the "Secret Life Of Arabia" at the end, you just might forget about some of the forgetable tunes. This was Robert Fripp's first appearance as a Bowie guitarist, and given his position with King Crimson as a superb guitarist, one might be left thanking Mr. Eno for bringing him along.

On first listen, I think I like this one even better than the last one. They are similar, but this one rocks harder.

Stuff opens strong and ends all Krautrock. I'm digging this very much.

This one's good... I do feel like it's a padded out EP. Low is the higher water mark, IMHO.
