I read this morning in the Metro that the Greenhouse is officially closed. Didn't see that coming! It was a fine place.

I'd occasionally get a couple of fried eggs, home fries and buttered whole wheat toast on my way to work from there. Wouldn't go so far as calling it a fine place; it didn't have a bathroom!
Posted by cdubrocker on 2007-04-24 13:38:59 +0000
Totally a fine place! It had a bathroom...you just had to go down the street to get to it.

Their cake was too big.

What was the name of the tiny lunch counter place that used to be where Alpha Omega is now? When my bro came to visit me in college we stopped there for a grilled cheese and frappe and ended up in the middle of a fist fight between a raucous customer and the dude behind the counter. Actually, not sure if the guy was a customer. Either way...that place had GREAT grilled cheese.

The Tasty blew Greenhouse out of the water.
I totally saw this coming.
Posted by cdubrocker on 2007-04-24 15:21:39 +0000
It probably did, but I never went there.
Posted by tommy on 2007-04-24 15:30:04 +0000
This is a sad day for those of us who enjoy a 9-inch-tall slice of black forest cake after a movie.
The best part about The Greenhouse was definitely the scowling thick-rimmed glasses guy who ran the register. Dude looked like a shop teacher from the 50's.

It was the last of the no-nonsense establishments in the Square. Now all we get is nonsense. It was a very comfortable place to be.
Posted by cdubrocker on 2007-04-24 15:50:10 +0000
Although the Friendly Eating Place still exists on the fringes. Never been there. Anyone?
Posted by tommy on 2007-04-24 15:52:55 +0000
I ate there exactly once. Got very sick. Might have just been a coincidence; not sure.
Are these guys affiliated with the "Friendly Eating Place" in JP?
Posted by Epoisses on 2007-04-24 15:56:33 +0000
I ate there before I saw the Queers and Showcase Showdown play a Sunday matinee in like '94.

Favorite part of the article is that Al Gore has no title...even though he should still be addressed as Vice President.

Has to be one of the best Punk Yule tunes of all time:
""Merry Christmas, I Fucked Your Snowman"
Other good ones:
Fear - "Fuck christmas"
Fishbone - "Slick Nick - You Devil You"
(apologies to G lib)Henry Rollins - "Twas the Night Before Christmas"
Ramones - "Merry Christmas (I Don't want To Fight Tonight)"
any others I'm missing?
Posted by virtue on 2007-04-24 18:12:52 +0000
I don't think the friendly eating place still exists.

It's all about Bartley's. Too bad there's always a ginormous line.
I never liked the Greenhouse, but it was a H.S. staple.

Maybe not 'punk', but...
Tiny Tim - "Santa Claus Has Got the AIDS This Year"
Pretenders - "2000 Miles"
Run-DMC - "Christmas in Hollis"

RE: no-nonsense
I've got a soft-spot in my heart for Pinocchio's, Charlie's, Shay's and Cafe Pamplona (Haven't been to the Pamp in a while, maybe it's changed). OK, a soft-spot for any establishment with an apostrophe ess.
I've only been to Bartlett's once, but it's still there. So is the Harvard Book Store and the Hong Kong and "Dewey, Cheatem and Howe".
The demise of Harvard Sq. is over-reported (but give me Central Sq. anyday over Harvard Sq.).

For the record, if you are ever doing a radio show, djing a party, making a mix tape, etc.
The following reference material is as addictive is it is fun:
my Mom bought me the Green Book for Christmas a few years back.
It's pricy and light on Jazz titles, but the thing is a weapon (both in size and knowledse)- if you bring it to a pop/rock event, you will be invincible in battle.
Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-04-25 16:24:53 +0000
I shouldn't have skipped The Descendents
