Backyard movies @ Tommy's

Hey, Ridesiders... This summer, we're going to try to start a semi-regular "movie night" at my house. We've got a projector, and will be showing movies on the side of our garage. Anyone who'd like to come over, hang out in our backyard, and watch movies is welcome. Movie will start as soon as it's dark enough, which I think currently is about 8:30-8:45, but that will obviously change as the summer goes on. First movie is this coming Sunday, June 10: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. This is a Jacques Demy/Catherine Deneuve musical from 1964. All dialogue is sung, and is in French (subtitled in English, though). 304 Washington, Somerville. More details will be on our specially-created Myspace page. Suggestions for future movies cheerfully accepted.

wow - this sounds super cool.

Would be there if I could. Just goes to show, a garage is good for more than just a car or a workshop.

I'd like to put this on the project list. What's your projector?

Ya, I saw that. I'm not ambitious enough, though. Bought a "Ben-Q", which wasn't too expensive and is bright/big enough for our purposes.

June 16, 8:30: Saturday Night Fever

Posted by tgl on 2007-06-15 09:55:11 +0000
...on Sunday. How did the first one go? I've been meaning to ask, but I was in Saugus.

Posted by tommy on 2007-06-15 09:59:30 +0000
No... on Saturday. First one was fine... all technical glitches were solved promptly (thanks to the Satellite's old car radio).

Damn jewish calendar (and christian mindset).

Ach, we'll be NH, but I highly approve of your movie choice.

Posted by tgl on 2007-06-16 19:33:44 +0000
Well, the road to hell and all that. It was my best intention to be there this evening.

We were joined for a while by the security guard at the construction site next door.

Wish I could have been there to see the opening "John Travolta foot cam" sequence on the side of yr house. A+ LOL

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-06-18 11:16:51 +0000
I'll make one of these, I swear.

Friday, June 22: Girl With a Pearl Earring. Probably starting a bit after 8:30.

Posted by Miriam on 2007-06-19 09:37:00 +0000
Wish I could be there, but hopefully I'll be snoozing in Tel Aviv...dreaming of my massage on Saturday evening at Hotel Mitzpe Hayamim.

Good movie, sorry I missed it (again).

Sunday, July 8: The Goonies. Most of you know it already I'm sure... if not, it's kinda like Indiana Jones, but if Harrison Ford was a pack of 12-year-olds. Prob. starting around 8:45.

Posted by tommy on 2007-07-06 12:48:32 +0000
And, to make up for the late notice on the last one: Friday, July 13: Friday the 13th -- The Final Chapter. Aka "Part 4". This one features Corey Feldman and Crispin Glover. In my opinion, the best of the series. This one will be the last one for a while, as we'll be away on honeymoon.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-07-06 13:43:18 +0000
Part 3 is almost as good.

Posted by tommy on 2007-07-06 13:54:20 +0000
Yeah, but only if you see it in 3-D.

Posted by tommy on 2007-07-13 06:43:26 +0000
I'm changing this one to Saturday night so I can go to a friend's birthday party.

Closing out the summer (although we'll probably continue past Labor Day anyhow) August 19: Purple Rain (1984) August 26: Bikini Beach (1964) September 2: Sixteen Candles (1984)

My entirely fake reason for not making it this summer: lame-o projection system. (Mr. J's earlier post about classic cars is fantastic, BTW). We're out-of-town on the 2nd, and I doubt we'll make it tonight. Enjoy the show.

re: Sept. 2 2007: Tommy is pretty much John Hughes about stuff. No work on Monday - there just may be the opportunity for an MF DÜ appearance... super sad I didnt get to purify myself in the lake of Minnetonka. oh well.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-09-02 09:46:12 +0000
Rollin' in tonight.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-09-02 17:31:36 +0000
L: The work of John Hughes holds up well after all this. Thanks again, Tommy, for hosting (and for the rides)!

And, John Hughes: 'chinaman' is not the preferred nomenclature.... 'Asian American', please.

Bump. We're starting this up again next Sunday with "Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo". If I've got your email address on my home computer, you should have already received an evite. If not, and you want to be on it, just email me, and I'll add you. But, you don't have to get evited... just show up any Sunday night. Rather than continually post here (and anyplace else I have buddies), I'm just going to keep this site updated. More info is on there, and it'll be kept up-to-date as the summer goes on. Hope to see some of you some Sunday(s).

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-12 04:01:19 +0000
Excellent. Though I will miss it, working all afternoon and evening on Sundays, I fully support the project, including the film choice of 'Electric Boogaloo' which is one of the 25 or so dvd's I own... Also Tommy, please try and remember to post upcoming dates here. Quite useful and open to all.

Posted by G lib on 2008-05-12 11:11:04 +0000
A love for Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo is one of the only good things I took away from my relationship with my (and Propagandatour's) evil ex-boyfriend. Chipster and I have a wedding to go to that afternoon, but will try to stop by after. Viva le Roi, Ice-T!
