The Route 1 Olympics

I fancy celebrating my newly solo status with some quality sporting action - would this Sunday work for people? Or is it too short a notice? Also we need to decide on the format and games, I suggest: Candlestick bowling 10 Pin bowling mini golf pool batting cages drinking what order should these be in and who is going to design the tshirts?

Posted by virtue on 2007-06-20 10:45:24 +0000
Well, obviously drinking should be done before, during, if possible, and after all of the other events. I like the idea of starting with mini golf, batting cages, then 10 pin, followed by the superior candle pin, and retiring to a pool hall with beer.

sounds good to me

The COMPETITVE drinking should be the last event.

Second...especially if there's not going to be a party bus carting your souced asses all over Rt 1.

Posted by tommy on 2007-06-20 12:35:38 +0000
I'd love to tag along for this. I will come in last in competitive drinking unless I get bonus points for my intimidating straight-edge attitude. On the bright side, that means I can cart soused asses all over Rt 1.

OK, serious role call time - who can make it and who can drive?

Posted by jbcardinale on 2007-06-21 14:26:08 +0000
I can drive (I'll stick w/baked goods). We need to determine scoring e.g., 5 pts for first, 4 pts for second, etc. For pool, are we playing 8 ball? Single elimination? Round Robin?

Posted by virtue on 2007-06-21 14:27:56 +0000
I can make it, and I can drive if I have to (I think, might be some scheduling issues with car), but would prefer not to.

Posted by tommy on 2007-06-21 16:17:25 +0000
I'm coming if y'all don't mind. I can drive up to five other people.

Posted by virtue on 2007-06-21 16:47:14 +0000
Me! Me! I'll happily bike to you.

Me! Me! too - I will tag along with Virtue if i may grab a lift timetable and scoring goes like this: Saturday night - pre games drinking warm up at the C4RT show Sunday morning - a pre game breakfast at IHOP or something? Mini Golf - rules as per the Cape Cod mini golf tour, 1 round of 18 holes. Scoring: The total number of people playing is the value of points available at each competition - for example if there are 8 of us, the person with the lowest score in golf would get 8 points, the next lowest 7 etc. If there are ties then the people tieing get the same score but the next person below them gets a score to reflect that there are tied people in front of them - ie if there are 2 people with 8 points then the 3rd person would get 6 points rather than 7 Batting cages - 3 goes on the machine with the slowest setting (3 goes being 3 insertions of whatever amount of quarters it takes) - a hit counts as a point irespective of if it goes foul. **** ice cream sundae break **** Big ball bowling - normal bowling scoring Candlestick - normal rules Pool - 8 ball simple pub rules - i think a round robin is in order - someone cleverer than me will have to come up with the format Dinner at Kowloon followed by scorpion bowl drinking - drinking is a judged event - points to be awarded for style, volume, speed, flair and outrage and offence caused. Those kindly souls who are running a dry ship will be automatically awarded a median score in recognition of their driving skillz use of perfomance enhancing drugs is encourged if not demanded throughout the competition

It was either tgl or mahatma who suggested a name for scorpion bowl drinking: scorpion bowling. Also, if Kowloon has Karaoke, I think extra points should be awarded for performing David Bowie.

I sent you two Olympians an email to the accounts listed on the "Gang Members" page with my phone number. Give me a call if you want to coordinate rides (if this is indeed going down).

It was a beautiful day for the Route 1 Olympics, although we didn't get quite as many events completed as planned. Tommy won the mini golf round with 51, followed closely by jbcardinale with 53. Corby came in 3rd (57), then Glib (58), and I had 61 (I did have two holes in one, and was the only player who made par on the volcano hole). I was equally wretched at the batting cages, hitting fewer pitches all together than anyone else hit in a single at bat (12 pitches, we played 3). Corby was a natural, and hit 32, then tommy with 25, jb, 22, G lib 19. I hit 5, although I got better each round. I found actually looking at the ball was helpful. We didn't find any candlepin on route 1, and had to veer off onto 99 a little ways to get big ball bowling. jb and Corby were neck and neck until the last 2 frames, when jb pulled ahead to take the win with 144. Corby had 129, G lib 88, I finally didn't come in last, with 80. tommy got off to a slow start, but nearly doubled his score in three frames (5, 6 and 7, I believe, though it was automatic scoring so I don't have a paper record. I believe tommy had 78 (correct me if I'm wrong). Some pinball and air hockey were played, although not as part of the competition. We attempted to hit Central Park Lanes in Eastie, but they closed before we got there. Tragically, I lost my wallet at some point in the 15 minutes we were there, and the group scattered to the winds. On a positive side, my wallet was found, and the finder called me, using the number on my dry cleaning ticket. The money was all there, and though I canceled my credit/debit cards, this is a huge relief, especially since my Negativland ticket was in the wallet as well. The finder is going to mail it to me.

Glad to hear about the wallet, Virtue. Where did they find it?

Right in Central Sq--maybe I should have done a more thorough step retracing.
