Home owners insurance

Anyone know of a good home owners insurance company? We are NOT able to get AMICA nor USAA, so anything other than those would be great. We're going to need some to finalize our closing.

I have had my house for 15+ years and haven't had to use my home owners insurance once so I don't have any experience in filing claims. You probably want to go to a local place where a real person answers the phone. Some places may give a discount if you have also have your car insurance with them. Somebody I work with who grew up in Medford, recommended Loprioro Insurance on Main St., Medford. As I work in the mortgage biz, if you have any other home buying questions, just holler.

Conor, We went through the insurance "broker" in Davis Square. Can't remember the exact name: Someone, Connoly, and SomeoneElse... something like that. We also had problems finding an company that would underwrite our home insurance, because we have asbestos shingles on the outside of the house, and apparently most of the insurance companies are afraid that we're going to rip them off, run them through a chipper, and inhale the dust or something. God knows. We got a quote from the Davis folks (using Arbella as the actual insurance company), and quotes from two other brokers that were recommended by our lawyer and real estate agent. I can get their names/numbers from M, if you want. From what we could tell, the world of home insurance is run by the same incompetant people with similar arbitrary rules as the car insurance racket. Example 1: Your insurance will cover "other structures" on your property in addition to your house. Your insurance company will tell you these are worth 10% of the worth of your house. Doesn't matter if you've got a homemade plywood trash-can shed, or a 1,000 square foot cabana made of gold. It's worth 10% of the house. Period. Example 2: They'll also cover personal property in the house. Lord knows how they figure this amount, but it does not involve asking what kinds of personal property you have, nor can you opt to change the coverage amount. Oh, also, that place in Davis will give you a travel manicure set as a free gift!

I have Allstate, which also covers my car. Which reminds me, I need to uninsure the Volvo.

Do you know if burkee has access to discounted homeowner's insurance through work? I get discounts for auto/home through mine.

Curious, Tommy. Was it Wedgwood-Crane & Connolly? Please let me know.

Yes, that's the one. I'm not sure that I "recommend" them over anyone else. Just, of the three places we found willing to insure us, their quote was most agreeable. They've been fine so far, but we haven't really asked them to do much besides take our money.

Grazie mille!

I think we're going with them. They were super easy to deal with and $400 cheaper than Phelan. Tommy is pretty much dead on about stuff.

Thru MTA? No good deals there.
