Boston Organics

When I was in Seattle, my friends had a service similar to this , which I was impressed with/by. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? How did it go?

Friends here in Amsterdam use a similar service and love it - especially since they have a small child who doesn't really "do" grocery shopping - and it gives them a lot of fruit & veg they have to get through every week (healthiness enforced by aversion to wastefulness). Oh, and friends in Brighton use a similar service there and their only complaint was that they have a hard time some weeks using it all up and wind up giving some away.

I've been getting Boston Organics for 2-3 years now, and really like it. Plus they try and buy local when they can. As one person, it can be really hard to get through a box (currently I get a small box of fruit only every other week). They've been slowly expanding their service, as well, so they deliver eggs, coffee, cheese, jams, plus bulk items as add-ons. Including wild, organic me. blueberries for $25/5lb flat. I keep thinking everybody's gonna get blueberry jam for da hollydaze, but then I remember that I'm so slack I can barely do the dishes.

I'm thinking about the 2/3 veg box.

Back when everyone lived around Union Sq., we split a box from The Food Project three-ways. Drawback being the pickup was in Lincoln, which could be a drag some days. Our last year in Cambridge we split a box from Drumlin Farm with the upstairs neighbor. The pickup was in-town (Cambridgetown, that is), a side street off of Columbia. I don't think there is any economic benefit from a CSA, or if there is, it's marginal (for the consumer at least). It's gives you warm fuzzies, however. I guess Boston Organics isn't a CSA.

It's the next best thing, though. Especially if you aren't likely to use up 3lb of garlic snapes.

"snapes"? Been reading a bit too much Deathly Hallows, have we?

Fooled me. Maybe it's time for a Potter #7 post. He dies, you know.

Garlic scapes/whistles are on the current Allintown menu. Yow! I opted for the small, biweekly 2/3 veg box. Updates to follow.

Somehow, I knew that didn't sound quite right...

Got the box today, and it's AWESOME.

What was in it? And what do you intend to make with the contents, Chef Epoisses?

We do a "half-share" with a farm based in Lunenburg. Unlike some others, we don't have to (or "get to", depending on your perspective) do any work on the farm. Farmer Dude parks his truck outside of Porter on Thursdays and we go get our stuff. He used to be a drummer in the Providence hardcore scene in the late 80's, for what that's worth. The first part of the summer was tough. Lots and lots of leafy greens. And, that's too bad for me, because the only leafy green I like is iceberg lettuce. But, there was none of that. Lots of weedy, gross stuff like arugula. Garbage disposal got a workout. Now, it's getting quite good, though. Last night with dinner, we had some corn, summer squash, and tomatoes from the farm. Dee-lish. Agreed with tgl... it's cheaper to go to the supermarket. But, you get more than just warm fuzzies... the farm veggies taste better, too.

Next time you have a bunch of arugula you don't want, I'll be your disposal. (and all of those other leafy greens, too, I like to torture my son by feeding them to him)

Iceburg lettuce is not a leafy green. Discuss.

RE: [local] farm veggies taste better. Carl over at the New Deal Fish Market on Cambridge St. is selling local tomatoes now. ...and the fish is always great. At the New Deal Market

2x corn, romaine, 2x cucumbers, mustard greens, red and green peppers, a pound of green beens, zuchini, and a ton of fruit. The stir fry alone will feed me for three days, plus a few salads and fruit for breakfast every day.

Hey, 10D, how'd you like some Hungarian wax peppers? They are too hot for our suburban honky tongues.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-08-19 16:11:18 +0000
Bring 'em. I'll feed them to my semetic flock.

So you can sit down with your lady love by the light of a few sconced candles and eat frisse'd radicchio in a truffle reduction at your Boston Interiors(tm) dining room set? *winks*

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-08-24 11:03:31 +0000
Uh no... we figured it's slightly cheaper to get that stuff delivered than going to the grocery store and buy it ourselves. And for the record, we are not what we own.

That's what I thought too, until I had a kid.

Some of the best tomatoes I've ever had. Wow!
