And people say lefties have no sense of humor...

From the Lucy Parsons Center e-mail newsletter for another radical film night movie: Radical Film Night: Jaws (Wed Sep 5, 7pm) Class and power collide on the open water. In this post-Situationist visceral attack on capitalist industry see the blind and crass consumerist society (represented here by the resort town of Amity) descended upon by the raw power of the unfettered revolutionary working classes (represented by the huge great white shark). In fitting response, the gilded elite dispatch the forces of the state (police chief Martin Brody) and the petite bourgeoisie intelligentsia (college grad Matt Hooper) to remove and kill the revolutionary threat. It soon becomes necessary for them to dupe and exploit the labor of working class hero Quint in their hunt for the 'shark.' I won't spoil the ending.

Also, from the friend of a friend (both Shark Week lovers) Dear Human, I just thought perhaps that a brief note might help resolve a misunderstanding that may have developed as I ingested your left arm. At the time of the incident, I somehow thought that your four-ounce watch was a 30 pound fish. After all, I was more than 100 yards away, the water was a bit murky, it was late in the day, and, frankly, I was a bit cranky after an afternoon of swimming around in the ocean. Although my olfactory faculties are sensitive enough to detect a drop of blood a mile away, I (and I'm terribly embarrassed by this) thought you were a fish. As I got closer, I realized that I had been foolish in identifying you as a fish. This creature, I remember thinking, is clearly a seal. I know there have never been any seals in the Gulf, but hey, I'm hard wired to know what a seal is. The white color of your skin should have been a clue. At any rate, I want you to know that I was absolutely horrified to finally determine that you were in fact a human. That night I filled my journal with page after page of remorseful prose. How could I have been so stupid! To have confused a human with a large mammal with a high concentration of body fat is inexcusable. Since I was a pup I've always been true to the great creed of all sharks: "Never bite a human!" This is the highest and most sacred calling of every shark, and clearly I have failed in my lifelong commitment to this core principle of squaline ethics and religion. Please accept my apologies. If you are ever on the coast again, look me up and we'll have a beer. T. Shark, NHB
