He was freaking tight and one cool cat.

He taught at UMASS amherst for many years starting in 1972.
A lot of great players have been associated as UMASS faculty.
UNH may have Clark Terry, but right now I'm leaning towards UMASS's Max Roach and Cecil Taylor (Taylor had on a pair of UMASS sweats @ Lincoln Center in NYC when I saw him).

Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson, and one of my African American Studies professors (the Reverend Doctor Art Hilson, UNH) went to UMASS Amherst - at the same time.

Sad loss of another great musician.

Just read the NYTimes piece this morning. There also a selected discography. My sole recording is Clifford Brown and Max Roach at Basin St, I don't think it's the Emarcy album listed.
Trouble with finding Max Roach stuff at a place like, say, Mojo Records is that it seems like his best work is for other "leaders". It pays to read the personnel listings.
I'd be interested in getting a copy of Brilliant Corners.

My dad had that Roach vs. Rich album. Always one of my favorite covers.

Getting some Charlie Parker / Dizzy Gillespie records is an excellent way to alleviate some of the Max Roach problems cited above.
Shaw Nuff is a tune that comes to mind, although the album I have it on is a compiliation and not an album proper.

And because Mojo no longer exists...
I find drummer 'led' albums can be a tad limited. Idris Muhammad and Art Blakey come to mind.
