M.I.A. - Kala

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/44983-kala http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/207/405/22041.html The record I'm most looking forward to hearing right now

Right there with you. Thinking about liberating the .mps3 of this (ahem) and purchasing the vinyl...

Don't bother. This record is sound and fury signifying nothing. A hype-driven load-of-garbage poorly-asssembled-beats and grating sing-songy vocals marketed exclusively on the fact that Intercscope can get middle-aged I'm-guilty-of-being-white record reviewers/consumers to love the idea of a "subversive non-white woman" espousing "politics." None of her politics makes a lick of sense. "Revolution" to M.I.A. seems to mean "one 360 degree rotation of a CD or an LP" rather than anything remotely articulate... oh wait $20 is what an A.K. costs in Africa and let me drop Darfur in there for no reason so it must be edgy, but be sure to check out her bling, SUV, etc. I don't believe one word outta this lady's mouth and that's the problem here. And hey I listen to a lot of wierd music, but these tunes are shit and don't believe anybody saying this is some ain't-no-sell-out/art-for-art's-sake record. First off there's like 4 "singles" on her, all of them are love songs. The remainder either (a) drag on way too long (b) are part part part and go nowhere or (c) try to cram way too many non-Western sounds that they end up doing none of any of the non-Western sounds right. It's a shame because there probably coulda been a good record here. Owning and claiming to love "Kala" is going to be the hipster version of wearing the Lance Armstrong "Livestrong" bracelets. Pass. Buy the new New Pornographers record instead, it owns over this shit.

Did someone say "Guilty of being white?"

I love strong opinions, thanks MC. But since I only listened to sound samples, I'll still give it a listen and will probably disagree about "poorly assembled beats". I really don't give a shit about the "politics" because seldom anymore do politics in music ring true. And since I'm white and past middle aged, I'm immune to the hipster pre-emptive strike.

It's cool... her "politics" are all most reviewers are talking about, so I figured why not shoot holes into that argument.

Ha. New Pornographers. I heard them on NPR, talk about white and middle-aged. Warning RE: Kala has been taken.
